The Solanco boys basketball team (4-6) lost to the top two teams in the section. Lebanon, which has emerged as the Section two favorite, downed the Mules 63-45 Wednesday, December 23. "Lebanon is a very good team," Solanco coach Scott Long said. "They are unique because they have all the pieces. They have good shooters, they're quick, and they have solid post players. They are very difficult to defend. We did a good job defending their three-point shots, but they were able to get by us and get layups."
The game was tied before Lebanon ended the first half on an 11-0 run to take a 32-21 lead. "They are very talented but we need to be more consistent on defense if we want to compete with teams like this," Long said. Many people, including Long, pegged Conestoga Valley as the preseason favorite because they returned their top players from last year's section title team. Instead, Lebanon has started quickly including a lopsided win over CV. "We have the potential to play with teams like this but we have to learn to play every possession like it's the most important possession of the game," Long said. The Mules were without two starters last week – Taylor Dombach (stress fracture) and Luis Figueroa (concussion). Long was pleased with the way Mike Worthington and Troy Miller performed against Lebanon. "Mike got a start at guard and gave us a spark on defense and offense," the coach said. "We're super-excited about where he's heading and he'll get a lot more time." The athletic Miller continues to improve. "Troy was on the football team and we've been getting him up to speed," said Long. "This was his first chance to get extended minutes and he has been working hard." Dylan Hastings led Solanco with 10 points. Robbie McHugh added nine and Colin Kilgore supplied seven. Miller scored six and Worthington had five. On Monday, December 21, Conestoga Valley defeated the Mules 64-43. "We made a lot of mistakes," said Long. “I think we're as good as them right now but they played better than us because they were more consistent." Solanco was up by four late in the second quarter before CV went on an 8-0 run and then hit a three-pointer early in the third quarter. "The next thing you know, you're down by seven points and you have to try to claw your way back," said Long. The Buckskins, who made 11 three-pointers on the night, put the game away by outscoring Solanco 15-2 in the fourth quarter. Hastings led the Mules with 27 points. "We didn't have a whole lot of offense besides Dylan," said Long. Comments are closed.
