The Solanco girls basketball team bounced back from two league losses to win its first game vs. a Section Two foe. The Mules topped visiting Elizabethtown 52-45 Friday night. E-town led 19-15 at halftime. "We made some adjustments," Solanco coach Chad McDowell said. "They were playing a zone and we made some changes." Solanco outscored the Bears 19-6 in the third quarter to take a 34-25 lead into the final eight minutes. "We were able to hit key shots at key times," McDowell said.
The Mules made 9 of 14 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter to seal the deal. Gabby Rossi hit 6 of 8 from the charity stripe in the period and finished with 21 points, five rebounds, and four assists. "Gabby stepped up and performed well," said McDowell. "She has been a great leader for our team, someone the younger girls have been able to look up to." Jess Cabrera collected nine points, three assists, and two rebounds. Nikki Boultinghouse supplied eight points and five boards. Jen Eberly recorded five points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Aleksa Burger had four points and four rebounds. When Boultinghouse got into foul trouble, Kara McClune (two points, one rebound) provided some quality minutes in the second quarter and Liz Mowrer (three points, four rebounds) contributed in both the second and third quarters. Both teams struggled at the start with Solanco leading 4-1 at the end of the first quarter. "We were able to control the tempo and do the little things right," said McDowell. "We put four full quarters together." The coach was grateful for the support from the home crowd including the Solanco student section. "It was a very good atmosphere and 'The Black Hole' was our sixth man," McDowell said. "Their excitement and enthusiasm throughout the game gave our young team the extra energy needed to propel us to the win. It was good to bounce back Friday after a long week." Last Wednesday, Hempfield defeated the Mules 56-40. Solanco was outscored 24-9 in the first half. "We were bitten by a slow start," said McDowell. "We didn't execute in the first half. We were competitive in the second half but our early mistakes really doomed us." Boultinghouse had all 13 of her points in the second half. Grace Kreider had eight points, three rebounds, and two assists for the Mules. Eberly added six points and 10 rebounds. Rossi registered six points, four rebounds, and three assists. Cabrera chipped in five points and two boards. On Monday, December 14, Warwick rolled to an 80-53 win over Solanco. "Our defense did not play very well," said McDowell. "We let their shooters get open. When you score 53 points at this level you should win but we had no answers for their shooters." Warwick led 23-9 at the end of the first quarter. "We didn't stop their dribble penetration very well," McDowell said. "The next day in practice we worked on stopping the ball." Rossi led the way with 13 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Cabrera supplied 11 points and three assists. Eberly registered nine points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Burger posted nine points, six rebounds, and three assists. Kreider had four points, two assists, and two steals. Boultinghouse notched five points and five rebounds. The Mules JV squad went 2-1, defeating Elizabethtown 24-20 and Hempfield 37-29 after losing to Warwick 28-21. Comments are closed.
