The Solanco softball team righted the ship with a 6-3 triumph over visiting Cedar Crest Friday afternoon. It was a vital game for the Mules, who were coming off a three-game losing streak. Coach Brett Miller was pleased with how his team responded to the challenge. Solanco (6-3) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to snap a 3-3 tie. Bekah Borcky got things started with a single up the middle and moved up to second on Kalyn Burger's sacrifice bunt. Sydney Sturgill singled to put runners on the corners before Abby Heidelbaugh blasted a three-run homer over the head of the center fielder. Burger (three strikeouts, one walk) got the final three outs to secure the win. She pitched all three games last week but still had enough gas to finish off Cedar Crest.
"Kalyn made the pitches when she needed to," Miller said. "She showed a little fatigue from pitching all three games." Solanco staked Burger to an early lead by tallying twice in the first. Heidelbaugh walked and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Madi Sheaffer. Maribeth Ault delivered an RBI single up the middle and Makayla Pluck clubbed a run-scoring triple. Cedar Crest scored one in the second and two more in the third to take a 3-2 lead. The Mules tied it in the home half of the third with Ault doubled to plate Heidelbaugh, who had reached and moved up on another Sheaffer bunt. "It was a critical game," said Miller. "It was especially important considering how we played against Manheim Township and then came back and played very well against Warwick except for an error." Warwick nipped the Mules 1-0 last Wednesday evening. Solanco had a chance to tie the game in the sixth but the hosts made an outstanding defensive play. Sheaffer singled with one out and was forced at second on an Ault grounder. Alyssa Henretty came on to run for Ault. Cait Armstrong walked and was replaced by pinch runner Allison McDowell. Pluck came through with a single up the middle but Henretty was thrown out at the plate by the Warwick center fielder. Solanco also had a chance to score in the second. Borcky singled with two out and advanced to second on a Burger single. Sturgill grounded sharply to the shortstop, who threw to third to retire Borcky to end the inning. The Mules were no-hit by Manheim Township in a 4-0 loss Monday, April 13. Solanco enters the week one game behind Elizabethtown in the section standings. Comments are closed.
