Solanco's JV baseball team was looking for positives after losing three games to Section One foes last week. "The Mules could only plate four runs in three games but they hit in to a significant amount of tough luck as they are putting the ball in play and not striking out," coach John Girvin said. The Mules fell 12-1 to Ephrata Friday.
Coleman Dow started on the mound. The Mounts jumped to a two run lead in the first and added four more runs in the second, the big blow being a bases clearing double. Jack Boomsma pitched the third and yielded five more runs on several hits. Dawson Kreider came on to get the final out. Solanco did not have a baserunner and trailed 11-0 entering the fourth inning. Alex McDonald led off with an infield single and Tim Fetterman singled. Hunter Shaw then laced a line drive that the shortstop caught and turned in to a double play. Sam Buckwalter doubled and Fetterman scored on a wild pitch to put the Mules on the board. Ephrata added a run in the fifth to take a 12-1 lead. In the sixth, Joey Gote reached base on a passed ball and Henry Woy walked, but the Mounts recorded the final outs. Last Wednesday, McCaskey upended Solanco 7-2. Freshman Cory Stively got the start. Over the first three innings, he yielded two hits and no runs. In the fourth, McCaskey scored two runs on a two-out single to take a 2-0 lead. The Tornado added two more in the fifth. The first 12 Mules were retired before Buckwalter singled to start the fifth. After a walk to Nate Shambaugh and a wild pitch, Boomsma singled in two runs, cutting the deficit in half. John Murray came on to pitch the sixth. McCaskey loaded the bases with two outs and tacked on three insurance runs on two Solanco errors. On Monday, April 25, Hempfield handed the Mules a 4-1 defeat. Gabe Horn got the starting nod for Solanco. McDonald was moved to the second spot in the lineup and immediately cashed in on the opportunity. He walked, stole second, and scored on a base hit from Hunter Shaw. Hempfield attempted to tie the game on a delayed steal of home in the bottom of the first but Horn got the out at second before the runner could score. The Black Knights did tie the score in the bottom of the second as the leadoff batter walked and came around to score on a single. The score remained tied until the bottom of the fourth when Horn walked the first batter and then gave up a run-scoring double. After two additional singles, Hempfield had a 3-1 lead. Boomsma entered to pitch in the fifth. He yielded a run on a single, two stolen bases, and an overthrow at third. Hempfield took a 4-1 lead into the sixth inning. McDonald and Murray walked and Shaw reached on an infield single, but the Mules were unable to score. "It was a well-played game with pitchers throwing strikes and fairly solid fielding," said Girvin. Comments are closed.
