by Bud Hart The Solanco Junior Varsity baseball team fell on hard times again this week, but came close to victory on several occasions. Monday, May 1, was not one of those occasions as the Donegal Indians put together a fourth inning offensive attack that led to a 10-2 Indian win in Mount Joy.
Solanco took an early 1-0 lead in the first on a Grady Unger single, stolen base and two errant throws. With Donegal up 2-1 in the third, Solanco tied it up when Haydn Fox singled, and with aggressive base running scored on Mike May’s ground out. That was all the scoring for the visitors as Donegal turned up the offense on their way to an eight run advantage. The Mules traveled to Berks County on Tuesday, May 2, where they faced a powerhouse program, the Wilson Bulldogs. Coleman Dow got the start and suffered through some rough spots, hitting a batter, issuing a walk and surrendering a single to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. The home team added two more runs in the third to run the score to 4-0. Cory Stively had the only hit, a single, prior to the fourth inning. Stively singled in the top of the fourth and Fox followed with a double moving Stively to third. He crossed the plate on Mike May fielder’s choice to add a one to the scoring column. In the fifth with the score 4-1 in favor of the Dogs, Henry Woy singled, Joey Gote was hit by a pitch and Dow walked. Unger singled driving in a run and Stively recorded his second double driving in Gote and Dow tying the score at 4-all. With no outs and the heart of the order up the threat died when the Dogs retired the side on three pop-ups. Wilson regained the lead in the fifth. “A couple of critical errors in the bottom of the sixth gave Wilson two more insurance runs,” said head coach John Girvin. “The Mules didn’t go easily.” Stively banged out his fourth hit of the day and Fox followed with a double. May drove in Stively on a ground ball error for Mule run number five. The final read Wilson 7 – Solanco 5. Girvin said both Dow and Brady Frampton, who made a relief appearance, gave a valiant effort and praised Stively and Fox for an awesome offensive display. “Many Berks County teams have separate freshmen programs and so only 10/12 graders play on the varsity and junior varsity teams,” added Girvin. “All in all, it was a worthwhile trip to Sinking Springs.” On Wednesday, May 3, Elizabethtown entered the pasture and left with a 4-0 win. Unger got the starting nod for the Mules. Henry Woy walked and reached second on a single. With two outs Leonard Brown singled. Attempting to score on the play, Woy was called out at home plate on a very controversial play to end the inning. The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on the strength of two singles, a couple of stolen bases and several wild pitches, including one on a third strike call. With the score 2-0 Elizabethtown, the Bears tacked on single runs in the third and fifth innings. Solanco had their chance when they loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth on a May and Brown single and Zac Fritz walk, but failed to get the key hit. Girvin said there was a high note to the game. With two outs May singled and KJ Nerys was called upon to pinch hit. “KJ is a sophomore who came out for the team,” added Girvin. “He had not played the game in several years. His older brother, Koby, who is on the varsity, convinced him to tryout. In one of the more special moments of the season, KJ singled to right field and could hardly contain his joy and enthusiasm as he sprinted down the first base line.” The final read 4-0 Bears. Brown threw two innings of relief striking out three and surrendering one hit. “This team has such a wide spectrum of baseball skills and technical awareness that we’ve learned to celebrate the positive moments that have come within many of the contests, “said Girvin.
