Solanco's JV baseball team lost three games to section foes last week. "It was a tough week," coach John Girvin said. "Hopefully it was a learning experience for the boys." The starting pitchers for the three contests were Gabe Horn, John Murray and Coleman Dow respectively. Murray caught the game with Ephrata and Hunter Shaw was behind the plate for the other two contests. The outfield featured Alex McDonald in center, and Nate Shambaugh and Tim Fetterman working the corners. Throughout the week, Jack Boomsma, Gabe Horn, Ben Harvey and Henry Woy saw some first base action. Second, shortstop and third base were played by Sam Buckwalter, John Murray, Dawson Kreider and Joey Gote.
Solanco lost 8-6 to host Elizabethtown last Friday. The Mules took the lead in the first as Kreider singled and scored on a double by Murray. The Bears took a 2-1 lead in their half on two singles and an errant throw. Solanco came back with three in the second as Dow walked, McDonald singled, and then there were four straight walks to Fetterman, Kreider, Murray and Buckwalter. In the bottom of the third, the Bears scored three unearned runs as a result of three infield errors. Horn came in to get the final out for Coleman Dow, who deserved a better fate, Girvin said. Solanco retied the contest in the fourth on as Kreider was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a single by Buckwalter. E-town added a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to take an 8-5 lead. Wiker came into to shut down the Bears' rally in the fifth. Kreider led off the sixth by reaching on an error and scored on a hit by Shaw. Last Wednesday, Conestoga Valley defeated Solanco 12-5. Solanco jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first as Kreider and Murray singled. Buckwalter drove in Kreider with a single. Murray scored on a wild throw and Buckwalter later scored on an error. The Buckskins tied it with three in the bottom of the inning in a walk and three hits and an error. Solanco retook the lead in the second as Fetterman singled, and during a sacrifice bunt by Kreider, came the whole way around to score on aggressive baserunning. CV retied the game in their half on a double and a single making the score 4-4. The Bucks plated 4 runs in the bottom of the fourth on a single, two doubles and a home run. Kreider relieved to get the final out. In the fifth, Dow relieved and yielded two unearned runs after a single and consecutive fielding errors to give the Bucks a 10-4 lead. Shambaugh blasted a triple and came the whole way home as the cutoff man missed his throw to score the last Mules' run. On Tuesday, April 5, Ephrata scored 11 runs in the final inning on only one hit to upend Solanco 12-3. The Mounts plated an unearned run in the second after walk and an infield error. Solanco tied the game in their half of the inning when Buckwalter walked, stole second and third, and scored on an errant throw from the catcher. The Mules took a 2-1 lead in the third as Fetterman singled, stole second, and scored on a single from Murray. Horn worked through three more innings, stranding seven Ephrata runners on base. Buckwalter made a diving play at second to end the fifth with the bases loaded and preserved the 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Alex McDonald started the inning with a swinging bunt, Fetterman got a bunt single, Kreider sacrificed both runners. and Murray executed a suicide squeeze to give the mules a 3-1 lead going into the final inning. With Horn having reached the pitch count limit set for him, Solanco turned to its bullpen. Fourteen batters, four pitchers, seven walks, three hits by pitches, two infield errors, and one hit later, Ephrata had a 12-3 lead. The Mules are generally starting six freshmen. "This is a young team with a lot of potential," Girvin said. "[Solanco] led every contest this week at some point and they are putting the ball in play with few strikeouts. The Ephrata loss was a real tough one. To get back on the winning track, the Mules have to be better defensively especially with the throws to bases. There were also some untimely mental mistakes that enabled the opposing team to maintain rallies that could have been controlled." Comments are closed.
