by Bud Hart Solanco's varsity girls basketball team split last week, losing to L-S in Lampeter 58-46 on Tuesday, January 24, and crushing Lebanon 66-33 at home on Friday, January 27. Solanco took a 28-25 lead to the locker room at the half on Tuesday night, but the Lady Pioneers came out with a vengeance in the third quarter, holding the visitors to a single digit while putting 22 in their column. “I thought we did an excellent job in all facets in the first half,” said Coach Chad Mc Dowell. “In the third quarter L-S made a run and took control of the game.” McDowell said that L-S increased their defensive pressure forcing Mule turnovers and easy Pioneer buckets. “You cannot give a good team, like L-S, extra possessions in the half court,” he said.
The Mules cut the lead to five points in the fourth quarter and with less than two minutes to play began to foul to extend the game. “L-S made their free throws to get the win,” said McDowell. The coach said he was pleased with the effort. “We were right there,” McDowell said. “Our girls believe in themselves more and more each day. Our confidence level is high and the girls believe they can play and compete with anyone.” Freshman Jenna Dombach led Solanco scoring with 12 points. She was followed by Nikki Boultinghouse (11), Aleska Burger (8), Jess Cabrera (7), Grace Kreider (6) and Jen Eberly (2). Burger led the team in rebounds with 10, followed by Kreider (8), Boultinghouse (7) and Eberly (5). Assists were credited to Krieder (5), Cabrera (3) and Burger (2). After honoring seniors Boultinghouse, Eberly, Elania Daily, Ashley Mundorff (scorekeeper) and Erika Wilson (videographer), the Lady Mules got down to business and lit it up against the hapless and winless Lebanon Cedarettes, 66-33, at home on Friday, January 27. The first quarter featured the talents of Cabrera and Burger - who, combined, scored 20 of the 22 team points. Cabrera swished the nets for three triples during the run. “Grace Kreider came off the bench to give us a defensive spark,” said the coach. “Grace places a lot of pressure on the other team’s guards, which will spark our offense.” Kreider ended with eight points, four assists and three rebounds. Alana Yoder completed two three-point plays on put backs and a foul, one of the put backs of an extremely acrobatic nature. Cabrera led the team with 23 points. In addition to Kreider and Yoder’s point totals, Cabrera was followed by Burger (14), Dombach (6), Boultinghouse (4), Kara McClune (3) and Eberly (2). Eberly hit double digits in rebounds with 10. Burger pulled down eight and Boultinghouse seven. The Lady Mules host Ephrata Tuesday, January 31, and travel to Mount Joy to visit Donegal on Friday, February 3. With wins over L-S and Lebanon, the Solanco junior varsity is now 14-2 on the season. The Golden Mules lost by 12 to L-S in their first meeting at the barnyard, but handed the Lady Pioneers a 36-29 loss on the L- S home court. Yoder led the way with 10 points with Mackenzie Gladfelter and Kara McClune each adding eight, Hanna Phillips five, Liz Mowrer three and Katie Sheaffer two. Ten Mules scored for Coach Taylor Kreider, handing Lebanon’s junior varsity a 43-29 loss at home on Friday, January 27. Yoder again led the way with eight. McClune added seven; Natalie Lasko and Hannah Walters each contributed six, Hanna Phillips and Gladfelter each scored four and Alyssa Henretty, Sheaffer, Montana Lockhart and Gabi Dolan two.
