The Solanco boys cross country team won three out of four in a meet at ELCO Tuesday, September 22. The Mules defeated the hosts (24-30), Lampeter-Strasburg (22-35), and Lancaster Mennonite (24-31), and lost to McCaskey (19-38). "The boys had the breakthrough race day that they have needed," said coach Craig Ausel. "We recorded three wins because the boys decided to support each other and take advantage of good pack running." Liam Hodgson led the Mules with a strong 3rd place finish in 17:05. "We have been speaking with our remaining boys regarding the importance of relying on each other to get their times down," Ausel said.
Keith Carnrike (11th) was next in 18:19, followed by Patrick Workman (12th) 18:20, Alec Munro (15th) 18:28, Connor Neaves (22nd) 18:48, and Ben Stickler (24th) 18:55 looked. "This split of 34 seconds made a giant difference in the scoring," said Ausel. "We are also very excited about the depth of the other Mules. The next group of seven – Ian Brown, Christian Stead, Aidan McBride, Dan Riddell, Tim Fetterman, Thomas Steinhauer, and Jose Silva-Serrano – had a 50 second split in their times. "With four freshman and two sophomores in this group the future looks bright," Ausel said. Solanco's girls went 2-2, downing ELCO (19-45), and Lancaster Mennonite (27-28), and losing to McCaskey (24-37) and Lampeter-Strasburg (26-35). The Mules' Cortney Johnson ran strong with leaders Issy Fite (McCaskey) and Jasmine McClintock (L-S) for two miles before fading to finish 3rd at 20:02. "The junior captain is getting stronger and stronger coming off a knee injury at the end of track season," said Ausel. "We anticipate to see Cortney’s best times in mid- to late-October." Morgan Perry placed sixth in 20:55. "Morgan ran very strong with the lead pack," said Ausel. "We saw the Morgan we are familiar with – tough and determined." Senior Essi Glah-Fisher finished in 8th position in 21:35. "Essi continues to get stronger and stronger," the coach said. Missing number four runner Aubree Roop, who has been resting a swollen knee, Casey Weder recorded one of her strongest performances of her new varsity career, running 25:12. "Casey was the difference in securing a one-point win over Lancaster Mennonite," Ausel said. The other Solanco finishers were Hannah Wheeler 25:18, Denise Brenneman 25:32, Autumn Boxleitner 25:37, and Christen Esposito 25:45, all running in a pack only seperated by 27 seconds. "If they can just continue drop some time as a group, we will be much stronger in October," said Ausel. Comments are closed.
