The Solanco football team lost to visiting Northeastern 55-35 in the season opener Friday night, August 23.
The Bobcats recovered four Mules fumbles and never trailed. "You always want to capitalize on mistakes," Solanco coach Tony Cox said. "Like I told them all, it's always going to come down to who makes the least amount of mistakes. I know we're going to make mistakes, but we've got to capitalize on those ones that the other team makes and we've got to make sure we fight through it and push ourself through." Many of the names have changed, but the expectations are the same.
The Solanco football team lost 27 seniors from last year's team which finished 7-5 including a district playoff win. The Mules still envision competing for another postseason berth this fall. "We're really young," Solanco coach Tony Cox said. "We brought five freshmen up so a lot of kids don't have experience for Friday night games, yet." The Golden Mules Youth Football Camp focuses on the "little things" a player needs to be successful.
Solanco varsity football coach Tony Cox hopes the camp serves as something of a refresher course for his high school athletes as they instruct the younger players. Cox, his assistant coaches, and current Mules players were the clinicians at the camp for kindergarten-eighth graders held last Thursday and Friday evenings at Solanco High School. On Friday, September 1, the Mules opened up their season hosting the Pottstown Trojans, a District I team from out of the Pioneer Athletic Conference’s Frontier Division.
Solanco’s junior varsity football team had trouble with visiting Kennard Dale on Monday, October 27. Kennard Dale won the game 38-24. The Solanco JV football team routed visiting Elizabethtown 35-8 Monday, October 21.
Quarterback Tyler Turpen and running backs Austin Polizzi, Prosper Eguzouwa and Kyle Allen each turned in a strong performance. Allen and Eguzouwa both scored two touchdowns and Polizzi punched in a score behind the dominant performance of the offensive line – Curtis Herr, Hayden Herr, Christian Weder, JJ Gamber, and Dawson Gote. Cody Kauffman, Keith Carnrike, Blade Sedner, and Jarrett McGuire led a stout Mules' defense. "Overall, it was a great team effort," coach Chris Lenhart said. Lenhart said it may be the final game of the season for Solanco (2-2). "Each week the guys have improved and remained patient, waiting for opportunities to come their way" the coach said. "This group of young players takes pride in battling the varsity offense and defense every week, and were just as much a part of the win (against Elizabethtown in the varsity game) as the guys who were on the field. Coach Hammel, Coach Glackin, and myself are proud of their effort, dedication, hard work, and positive contributions to the Solanco football program." The Solanco Junior High football team lost 24-14 to Elizabethtown. Jayson Hopkins returned a kick 63 yards for a touchdown and Nate Kellenberger hauled in a 31-yard pass for the other score. "We continued to show improvement and work together as a team," Solanco coach Todd Brown said. "We had a few good stands on defense and our offense was able to consistently move the ball. This week we installed a no-huddle attack which kept Elizabethtown off-balance and unable to blitz their linebackers. David Baughman and Nate Kellenberger played very well on defense and both had key catches on offense." |
