by Bud Hart Visiting Manheim Central scored four goals in the first half on Tuesday, September 26, on their way to a 5-1 win over Solanco's varsity boys soccer team. Solanco’s sole goal was scored by Evan Salisbury at the 61:00 mark on an assist from Tucker Pierson. The Barons were awarded nine penalty corner shots to the Mules' three. Shots on goal also went in favor of Manheim, 17 to seven. Sophomore Luke Snyder was credited with eight saves, Dylan Sheaffer four.
“We held Manheim Central scoreless for 20 minutes, but they eventually got on the board and tacked on a few more for 4-0 lead at the half,” said head coach Ron Miller. “The second half was much better and senior captain Evan Salisbury, after being out for few weeks, came back in a big way scoring on a feed from Tucker Pierson. We played them 1-1 in second half falling 5-1.” After being embarrassed at home in the first meeting against Cedar Crest, Solanco came out ready to play Thursday, September 28, battling the Falcons to a 0-0 half time score. “Jake Smolik made seven saves in the first half, which was vital,” said Miller. “With momentum on our side in the second half the boys came out and threatened to score early but just couldn't get off a good shot.” Twenty minutes into the second half, Cedar Crest sent a shot into the box which was deflected off of one of the Mule defenders for a deflating 1-0 deficit. “We couldn't produce any quality shots the rest of the way and gave up two late goals for a 3-0 loss,” said Miller. On Saturday, September 30, Solanco visited Lebanon hoping for a much needed win. “With the wind in our face in the first half, Sean Salisbury sent a through ball to Tyler Williams who finished off with a nice shot for a 1-0 lead 17 minutes into the game,” said Miller. “We gave a great team effort to go up 1-0 at the half.” The Mules had an even better second half as, three minutes into the game, Luis Solis fed Evan Salisbury who connected on a phenomenal shot from 30 yards away for a 2-0 lead. With eight minutes left, Dylan Schaeffer punted the ball 70 yards, bouncing it to Evan Salisbury who beat the goalie for a second time in the game and the Mules returned to Quarryville with a 3-0 win. “Goalies Jake Smolik and Dylan Shaeffer preserved the shutout with some quality saves and the defense led by Thomas Broomall and David Harvey frustrated Lebanon all day,” said Miller. “It was a much needed win and we’re hoping it propels us to some more wins next week.” Comments are closed.
