Solanco gained an early upperhand in the section standings with three wins, including a 10-6 victory over the Mules' main rival, Elizabethtown, Friday night. Strange things often occur during Solanco's annual night game visit to E-town and this was no different. The contest, played in a light drizzle which intensified late, featured three umpire conferences and lasted 2 1/2 hours. "It was an interesting night," Solanco coach Brett Miller said. Freshman Abby Heidelbaugh blasted a two-run homer to left-center to cap a four-run second inning outburst. The Mules added four more in the third before the hosts battled back to cut the margin to 8-6 heading into the seventh. Kerri Mauger delivered a two-out, two-run single to plate Maribeth Ault and Madi Sheaffer to pad the lead to 10-6. "That was a huge, productive inning," said Miller. "The situation is a lot easier when you're ahead 10-6 and it showed. It was still a wildly successful week for the Solanco baseball team. The Mules received three complete games from their pitchers to sweep the three teams expected to challenge Solanco for section supremacy. "It was incredible," Mules coach Tom Fish said. "We beat three of our toughest opponents in four days and got three complete games. Sophomore Brady Thomas got his first start Friday against Elizabethtown and responded with a superb performance. Thomas allowed just five hits and fanned eight. "It was a tremendous effort by him on the mound," Fish said. "He has swing and miss stuff and had control of his breaking ball. He was really in control most of the game." Solanco's track and field teams had meets with Cocalico and Lebanon last week.
The Mules' boys team defeated Cocalico 76-70 while the Solanco girls lost 81-69. "The boys’ team pulled out a nice and a surprise win," coach Ivan Haines said. "For the first time we were able to win a relay." Solanco's JV softball team finally got on the field last week.
They made up for lost time. The Mules recorded a pair of lopsided victories over Elizabethtown and Conestoga Valley. The Solanco JV baseball team has been road warriors.
Unable to practice outside and then displaced from their own field by the varsity squad, the Mules have persevered, winning three games last week to improve to 4-1 on the season. On Friday, Solanco posted a walk-off win as the Mules were designated as the home team despite being forced to play at Elizabethtown. The Solanco baseball team earned its first win of the season by fending off Pequea Valley 12-8 last Thursday. The Mules stormed out to a 9-1 lead. Joe Murray had an RBI double and Darren Rutledge and Zack Leonard each added an RBI single in Solanco's four-run first. Damon Kreider, who was 4 for 4 on the day, ignited a five-run second inning uprising with a bunt single. Rutledge had an RBI double to left in the frame and Eric Lefevre clubbed a two-run double. |
