The softball season got an unofficial kickoff Wednesday, February 12 as new Rising Sun coach Pete Veasey met with his players in the school cafeteria. Veasey comes to Rising Sun after spending last year as the head coach at Delcastle Tech and the two seasons prior to that at Pencader Charter. The Elkton resident, a facilities supervisor for Target Corporation, was recently transferred from Wilmington to Abingdon. "I was very appreciative to be offered the Rising Sun position," Veasey said. "It's a great program."
He brings a wealth of experience to the job. Veasey coached with the Churchville Lightning travel ball program for 15 years and has coached Little League. He has also volunteered with Cecil County Junior Football. "I'm excited," said Veasey. "I'm up for it. With my knowledge I know I can hang with this program. Delcastle and Pencader don't have the talent Rising Sun does." The Tigers plan to be aggerssive. "I'm a small ball kind of guy," said Veasey, who will be assisted by Michael Hawke. "I like to be very aggressive on the bases. I tell them if they figure a way to get on base I'll figure out how to get them around. The kids are going to have to pay attention." "He has many years of experience at many levels," Rising Sun athletic director George Hildebran said. "He has a lot of great ideas and is enthusiastic. He understands the history of Rising Sun softball and we look forward to him continuing that tradition." Veasey replaces Lindsay Bennett, who stepped down after two seasons at the helm. Bennett pitched the Tigers to the 2003 state title, the most recent of the program's six state championships. Bennett won a region title as a coach in 2012. Comments are closed.
