Sierra Montz of Perryville successfully defended her title in the 300 intermediate hurdles and the Panthers' 4 x 400 relay team won gold for the second straight year at the MPSSAA track and field meet which concluded Saturday at Morgan State University. The Perryville girls finished third in the team competition and were a couple of miscues away from winning their first-ever team title. Smithsburg (103) topped Manchester Valley (99), and the Panthers (92).
Montz took command of the 300 hurdles from the start and held off a late charge from Natalie-rae Jefferson of Northwestern (Baltimore) to prevail by .47 of a second. "I wanted to get out of my blocks because coach is always talking about how you have 50 or so many meters of free energy so you either use it or you lose it," Montz said. "So I said I was going to use it. So I got out of the blocks and the goal for the whole season was not to stutter-step to the hurdle and when you get 10 meters away from the hurdle, you attack. So that my was my goal the entire race and that just helped me get in front. Once I realized I was out in front, I had to hold my ground." Montz's strategy was simple – "you need to run a clean race." "As we all remember last year, the two runners that were in front of me, they ended up falling" the Perryville senior said. "So Coach (Travon) Morgan was always like, 'Run your race. Run a clean race. The person who runs a clean race will win the race.' When it comes to hurdling, if your form is bad, you're not going to win." Winning last year did not lessen her burden. "That put more pressure on me," Montz said. "The first day of practice, (Coach Jake) Moore took the newspaper article and put it on my back and said, 'You're a target'." Montz scored a total of 26 points in the meet. She was second in the high hurdles, third in the triple jump, and seventh in the long jump. Autumn Estep and Alysa Conway were part of the victorious 4 x 400 relay team for the second consecutive year and now have a total of three relay gold medals. On Saturday, Estep and Conway teamed with Katelyn Broughman and Brooke Doane to capture the crown in a time of 4:12.54. Conway ran the last leg in 60 seconds to overtake the North Carroll anchor and win by over three seconds. The Panther sophomores Doane and Conway and the junior Estep each had a big meet. Doane was second in the triple jump, fifth in the long jump, and eighth in the 800. Conway was third in the 400 and sixth in the 200. Estep finished fifth in the 400 and seventh in the 800. Jaymarie Woods was seventh in both hurdles events. All six Perryville pole vaulters placed for the second straight season. Hailey McDonald placed second in the girls event with Paiton Kelly fourth and Erica Scheppelmann sixth. Two Panthers earned points in the shot put with Jarah Cevis third (PR of 32-3) and Jillian Miller eighth. Aleah Losoya was eighth in the 3200 meter run. Perryville also left some points on the track which proved costly when the team point totals were tallied. The Panthers' 4 x 200 relay team was disqualified and the 4 x 100 team made a mistake which resulted in a 12th place finish. Bohemia Manor mined gold in the first event of the meet on Thursday night. Kirstin Walz, Tara McDonald, Elle Meyer, and Jamie Rhudy teamed to take the 4 x 800 relay. Meyer also placed fourth in the 3200. The 1A boys competition was highlighted by a virtuoso performance by Bohemia Manor junior Ty Franks. Franks won the 800 for the first time and the 3200 and 1600 both for the third time. He combined with Luke Salata, Alex Lafountaine, and Jared Morse to place second in the 4 x 800 relay. Franks has a total of 17 state titles including three cross country crowns and eight indoor gold medals. The Eagles were eighth in the team standings, two spots behind Perryville. Seniors Corban Porch and Cam Crosler went out in style in the pole vault. They tied for second place with career best vaults of 12-feet. Freshman Cage Jones finished seventh. Senior Tyler McCall finished fourth in the 800 and ran a superb leg in the 4 x 800 relay as he and teammates Ben Douty, Mitchell Johansen, and Ryan Kiger finished fourth. Perryville placed eighth in the three other relays. Deshaun Bryant, Elijah Johnson, Zach Buckson, and Marquis Topp were eighth in the 4 x 200 relay Thursday. Johnson, Bryant, Anthony Hernandez, and Caleb Robinson recorded an eighth place finish in the 4 x 100. Buckson, Johansen, Kaiden Neff, and McCall were eighth in the 4 x 400. Matt Salvatore was eighth in both the 3200 and 1600. Ben Kuhn finished fourth in the discus. Topp placed fifth in the triple jump. Jacobo Negron was sixth in the 3200 and Tanner Bird placed seventh in the high hurdles. For Bohemia Manor, Lafountaine was sixth in the 400 and Justin Pritchett finished seventh in the high jump. In the 2A competition, Alex Kerns led Rising Sun with a sixth place finish in the discus. North East's Alec Preisch was second in that event. The Indians' Dean Palmer placed second in the pole vault and fourth in the 400. Josh Eastridge was fifth in the shot put. Sarah Kubat finished seventh in the girls discus. For Elkton, Allajah Borden was fourth in the pole vault and Raiquon Estep finished eighth in the triple jump. Photos from Saturday are below. Click HERE to view photos from day one Thursday.
