The Elkton All-Stars advanced to the championship round of the Little League Maryland District 5 Senior Division baseball tournament with a 6-2 triumph over Rising Sun Sunday in Chesapeake City. Brent Smith tossed six solid innings to earn the win and Mike Moran came on in the seventh to get the final three outs. Victor Norris had an outstanding game defensively at third base and added a two-run homer in the sixth.
A key defensive play by centerfielder Owen Null gave Elkton some early momentum. Rising Sun's Caleb Dye led off the game with a walk. After an out, Aaron Richardson singled through the hole. With two outs, Dave Ravel ripped a single up the middle but Null charged and threw a strike to the plate to nail Dye. Elkton then tallied twice in the home half of the first. Smith lined an RBI single to left and Moran had an RBI hit to center. Rising Sun left the bases loaded in both the second and third innings. In between, Elkton's Will Lorman made it 3-0 with a two-out RBI hit. Rising Sun finally got on the board in the seventh. Dakota Hodgson and Richardson had consecutive singles and Jake Keane blooped an RBI single to right-center. But Moran came on to get the next batter to hit a comebacker and Elkton turned a double play. Moran then retired the next hitter to seal the deal. Rising Sun plays Perryville Monday at 6:15 with the winner needing to top Elkton twice to take the title. Perryville stayed alive with a 2-0 win over Chesapeake City last Wednesday thanks to a gem hurled by pitcher Zach Strong. Strong struck out 10 and yielded just two hits. Comments are closed.
