Perryville's track program brought more hardware home from Kent Island Saturday. The Panther boys captured the 1A east region title for the fifth straight season while the girls triumphed for the fourth consecutive year. Perryville's girls won eight of the 18 events an amassed an astounding 244 points. Cambridge-South Dorchester (136) was second followed by Bohemia Manor (83), Colonel Richardson (39), Snow Hill (37), Joppatowne (37), Mardela (30), North Dorchester (27), Pocomoke (25), Crisfield (12), and Havre de Grace (7).
Alysa Conway, Brooke Doane and Sierra Montz each triumphed in two individual events and will be participating in four events at the state meet. Conway captured the 200 and 400. She was second in the 100 and teamed with Katelyn Broughman, Doane, and Autumn Estep to take the 4 x 400 relay. Doane prevailed in the long jump and triple jump and was fourth in the 800. Montz swept the two hurdles events, placed second in the triple jump, and was fourth in the long jump. She is the reigning state champion in the 300 hurdles. Broughman, Estep, and JayMarie Woods also each earned a state berth in four events. Broughman, Woods, Christen Dodson, and Andrea Negron combined to win the 4 x 100 relay. Broughman, Woods, Dodson, and Estep teamed to take the 4 x 200 relay. Broughman was also fourth in the 400 meter dash. Woods finished third in both hurdles races. Kayla Losoya placed second in the 300 hurdles and third in the triple jump. Perryville's Jillian Miller won the shot put ahead of teammate Jarah Cevis. Six other Panthers advanced to the state meet in one event – Teri Wennersten (second, high jump), Hailey McDonald (second, pole vault), Paiton Kelly (third, pole vault), Aleah Losoya (fourth, 3200), Erica Scheppelmann (fourth, pole vault), and Madalyn Wilkinson (fourth, discus). The top four finishers in each event advanced to this week's state meet which will be contested Thursday and Saturday at Morgan State University. Perryville finished second behind Manchester Valley last year. Smithsburg figures to be one of the Panthers' toughest foes this spring. "They're motivated and they are very happy to get out of the shadow of the boys," Perryville coach Jake Moore said. "They're trying to accomplish something pretty big on their own. We're happy for them. They have a lot of potential going into [the state meet]." In the boys team competition, the Panthers (140.5) defeated Colonel Richardson (119), Bohemia Manor (110), Cambridge-South Dorchester (100), Havre de Grace (83.5), Snow Hill (60), Kent County (22), Crisfield (17), North Dorchester (17), Washington (10), Pocomoke (10), and Mardela (3). The region meet left Moore with mixed emotions. Although Perryville stretched its streak to five straight team titles, the Panthers still suffered some disappointments. Sprinter and jumper TyRell Hollingsworth sustained a foot injury Thursday that sidelined him for Saturday and he would not have been able to participate in the state meet even if he had qualified in an event. The Panthers also did not qualify anyone in the long jump. "It might have been one of those days where the kids were looking far down the trail and tripped on the log that was at our feet," said Jake Moore. "I would be lying to you if I said we were super-thrilled with how the day went. We're happy to get the win but we took our lumps this weekend. We are not taking everybody we had hoped to the state championship." Region champion Corban Porch led a Perryville sweep of the pole vault with Cam Crosler second and Cage Jones third. Matt Salvatore was third in the 1600 and fourth in the 3200. Perryville's other state qualifiers in individual events: Jacobo Negron (second, 3200), Tyler McCall (third, 800), Tanner Bird (third, high hurdles), Ben Kuhn (third, discus), Marquis Topp (fourth, triple jump), and Joe Rinehart (fourth, shot put). All four of Perryville's relay teams advanced. Elijah Johnson, Deshaun Bryant, Anthony Hernandez, and Caleb Robinson were third in the 4 x 100 relay. Bryant, Johnson, Zach Buckson, and Topp finished third in the 4 x 200 relay. Ben Douty, Mitchell Johansen, McCall, and Ryan Kiger placed third in the 4 x 800. Buckson, Johansen, McCall, and Kaiden Neff finished fourth in the 4 x 400 relay. Winning a third state title in four years will be a difficult task for the Panthers with Fort Hill and Bohemia Manor among the top contenders. "The thing is, we certainly took a hit, but I'm sure everybody took a hit," said Moore. "Nobody has the perfect region meet. We told our kids the region meet is like a Brita filter. Everything goes in and only the good stuff comes out. Nobody has a perfect region meet and also crazy things have happened at the state meet. Kids have tumbled in the 800 and no-heighted in pole vault. That's why they run the meet. We'll just focus on our events and go from there." Bohemia Manor's Ty Franks earned four first place finishes at the region meet. He won the 800, 1600, and 3200 and teamed with Luke Salata, Alex Lafountaine and Jared Morse to prevail in the 4 x 800 relay. The Eagles' Justin Pritchett won the high jump. 2A MEET The Rising Sun girls team, fifth in the team standings, is sending two distance runners, two relay teams, and a triple jumper to the state meet. Teresa Reid was third in both the 3200 and 1600. Alanah Bell placed second in the 3200. Heather Martin was fourth in the triple jump and also earned region points in the high jump (fifth), pole vault (sixth), and long jump (seventh). Brooke Ratledge, Madison Webb, Cheyanne Johnson, and Mikaela Berg were fourth in the 4 x 100 relay. Josie Brown, Danielle Lee, Bell, and Reid placed fourth in the 4 x 800. On the boys side, Bryce Calhoun was third in the triple jump and Alex Kerns finished third in the discus. Colin Cascio, Jacob Cohen, Ryan Hendrickson, and Martin Stillwell were third in the 4 x 100 relay. Dean Palmer of North East captured both the pole vault and 400. Comments are closed.
