The county's best boys lacrosse rivalry did not disappoint. Collin Beck scored 1:14 into sudden death overtime to lift North East to a 9-8 triumph over rival Rising Sun Monday night. The Tigers (0-1) had tied it in dramatic fashion with 9.9 seconds left. Indians' goalie Alex Miller made a save with 20 seconds left and attempted to heave the ball down the field to run out the clock. Rising Sun's Tyler Lyness intercepted the clearing attempt and, from about 35 yards out, fired a shot into the open cage as the Indians defense tried to recover.
Lyness had a chance to win the game at the buzzer but his shot was saved by Miller. Rising Sun had the first possession of overtime but could not convert. Beck, a defenseman, picked up the ball deep in his own end of the field and sprinted straight down the middle before bouncing a shot over the shoulder of Tiger goalie Noah Jones. Trailing 5-3 at halftime, Rising Sun scored two goals to start the third quarter. North East responded with two consecutive scores to take a 7-5 edge into the fourth quarter. After the Tigers' Austin Philistine scored, North East's Lane Schmidt made it a two-goal game again before Rising Sun scored two late goals to force the extra session. Brad Alexander tallied his third goal of the game with 2:28 to go. The Tigers got the ball back with a minute to go but did not score until Lyness' heroics. Comments are closed.
