Cecil County's Silas Filliaux, Hunter Zacerous, and Jarrett Hunter placed at the MPSSAA wrestling state tournament which concluded Monday at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro. Rising Sun's Filliaux (40-5), a conference and region champion, finished fourth after being pinned in the consolation finals by Colin Savage of Poolesville.
Filliaux was the lone local wrestler to advance to the semifinals. He lost 10-4 to undefeated Alex Blake of La Plata. Blake controlled the bout and scored five takedowns while all of Filliaux's points came on escapes. Filliaux bounced back in the consolation semis with an 11-3 major decision win over Perryville's Zacerous. Zacerous defeated Jake W. Sweitzer of Southern (Garrett) Monday to finish fifth. Zacerous lost in the opening round of the main draw before rebounding in style with three consecutive victories by pin before losing to Filliaux. The Panthers' Jarrett Hunter (33-10) placed sixth after being pinned by Southern's Jace Guy Monday. Hunter prevailed by pin in the opening round of the championship draw before losing in the quarterfinals. Hunter posted a pair of victories before being pinned in the consolation semifinals. Rising Sun senior Richie Moore (30-13) won two bouts Saturday. Moore received a forfeit in the opening round when his opponent was unable to compete because of a skin condition. He lost in the quarterfinals before triumphing in dramatic fashion in the second round of consolations. Trailing 4-3 with time ticking down, Moore worked his way behind Sparrows Point's Lexx Carr a split second before the buzzer sounded. Initially, the referee did not award Moore two points for a takedown but changed the decision after conferring with the scorer's table. Here's how the other county wrestlers fared: North East's Gabe Nuzzo (103) 0-2, Bohemia Manor's Hayden Hancharick (113) 0-2, Bohemia Manor's Tyler Kelley (120) 0-2, Rising Sun's Jon Price (120) 1-2, Perryville's Jeff Leonard (120) 0-2, North East's Colin Day (126) 1-2, North East's Marshall Johnston (160) 1-2, Perryville's Nathan David (170) 1-2, Rising Sun's Taylor Cimorosi (195) 0-2, Perryville's Steve Thomas (285) 1-2.
