Mitchell Johansen caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Elijah Johnson with 18.5 seconds left to propel the Perryville football team to a 36-28 victory over visiting Bohemia Manor Friday night. With the score tied at 28, the Panthers took over on the Eagles' 24 following a short punt with 35 seconds left. Tony Smith rushed for five yards on the first play. Perryville hurried to the line and Johnson found Johansen down the middle of the field deep in the end zone. TyRell Hollingsworth passed to Pernell White for a two-point conversion to make it 36-28. The Panthers (3-0) sealed the win when the Eagles (0-3) fumbled on a desperation hook and ladder play with 3.3 ticks left. Perryville rallied from a 14-point deficit. Bohemia Manor had tank a 28-14 edge with 5:03 left in the third quarter on a 19-yard run by Justin Frey. The Panthers countered quickly. Smith, who had a good kickoff return and 33-yard reception on the drive, scored from two yards out. The two-point conversion run failed so the Eagles led 28-20. Smith tied in early in the fourth quarter with a 17-yard TD scamper, his fourth score of the game, and Johnson ran in for the conversion. The TD was set up by a 32-yard pass from Smith to Hollingsworth on a halfback pass. It was Hollingsworth's only catch of the contest. Perryville batted down a Bo Manor pass on fourth down and took over on their own 34 with 4:43 to play. A 36-yard connection between Johnson and Johansen gave the Panthers a 1st and goal from the 10. But the Eagles' defense came up huge with Qamar Muhammed knocking Johnson out of bounds at the one on 4th down from the two with about 1:45 remaining. Perryville still had two timeouts left and used them on second and third downs to force the Eagles to punt from their own five. That set up the winning drive. It was battle from the beginning as the Eagles' outstanding coach Todd Shives was seeking his 100th career victory. Smith put Perryville up 8-0 on the first drive with a three-yard TD run and two-point conversion set up by a 61-yard gallop by Johnson. The Eagles responded with a 20-yard TD run by Bo Matherly and Frey added the two-point conversion. Perryville went ahead 14-8 on a two-yard plunge by Smith with 1:44 left in the opening quarter. On the ensuing play from scrimmage, Matherly scored on a 59-yard run and the PAT put the visitors ahead 15-14. It appeared as though the Eagles would enter halftime with a one-point edge. But a dropped pass stopped the clock and forced Perryville to punt. Bohemia Manor's Quentin Price was able to block the punt. Frey scooped up the ball at the Perryville 28 and scored as the clock expired. The extra point gave the Eagles a 22-14 advantage at the half.
