Sara Burkholder Hess Hess, 93, formerly of Quarryville and more recently, Millersville, went to be with her Lord and Savior on December 24. She was born April 20, 1923, in Manson, Iowa, the youngest child of the late John Wolf Hess and Lizzie Burkholder Hess of Akron, Pennsylvania. In her early childhood, the family returned to Akron, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Eastern Mennonite High School in Harrisonburg, Virginia. In 1942, she married Herbert Snavely Hess, of Oregon, Pennsylvania. The following year, they moved to Runnymede Farm south of Quarryville, where they farmed, raised seven children, and operated a bed and breakfast. They were active members of Mechanic Grove Mennonite Church. In 2005 they moved to Millersville and in 2015 to Oak Leaf Manor in Landisville. They celebrated their 73rd anniversary in November 2015 and Herbert passed away in May 2016. She is survived by children: Judith, wife of Mark Nord of Hyattsville, Maryland; Carol, wife of Jay Mylin of Manheim; Linda, wife of Roy Musser of Willow Street; Herbert L., husband of Beth (Good) of Millersville; Debra, wife of Robert Detwiler of Millersville; Marcia, wife of John Harnish of Quarryville; and Brent, husband of Julie (Charles) of Lancaster; 14 grandchildren; and 28 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers: Joseph, Simon, and James Hess; sisters: Alma Hershey, Margie Hershey, and Emma Hess; and grandson, Christian Detwiler. Sara had the gift of hospitality and loved visiting and conversing with family, friends and guests at their B&B. She was known as the “candy lady” at her church and always had a “bottomless” candy jar in her home. She died peacefully at Oak Leaf Manor in Landisville. The family expresses gratitude for the loving care provided by the staff of Oak Leaf Manor. A funeral service will take place at 11 AM on Friday, December 30, 2016 at Refton Brethren in Christ Church, 110 Church St., Refton, PA 17568. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 10-11 AM. There will be a viewing at the church on Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. Private interment will be in the Mechanic Grove Mennonite Cemetery. Kindly omit flowers.
