Richard S. “Dick” Cunningham, 81, of Nottingham, passed away on January 5, 2019 at Conestoga View Nursing and Rehabilitation. He was the beloved husband of Janet M. (Schlotzhauer) Cunningham, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Paul H. and Claire (Heisse) Cunningham. Dick was a graduate of J.P. McCaskey High School, class of 1955. After high school, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Millersville State Teacher’s College in 1959. He then went on to earn two master’s degrees, one in English and one in math, from Pepperdine University. Dick proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1963, and then the U.S. Air Force from 1963 to 1979. He then accepted a position as a hazmat specialist with the Department of the Army, retiring in 2005. After retirement, Dick was a substitute teacher in Solanco School District. In the 45 years that Dick worked for the U.S. Government he was able to travel the world. During this time, he learned to speak Thai. Due to his military service and civilian military service, Dick and Janet lived on Air Force bases and in numerous cities and towns across the United States and Hawaii. He was a member of Grace Church of East Petersburg and the American Legion. The last few years were difficult for Dick due to his health, but he had many wonderful adventures with Janet and lived a full life. Comments are closed.
