Malcolm P. “Mac” Dalrymple, 91, of Quarryville, formerly of Andover, NJ, passed away on Monday, September 25, 2017, at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. He was the loving husband of the late Catherine V. (Van Syckle) Dalrymple, sharing 64 years of marriage at the time of her passing in 2012. Born in Newton, NJ, he was the son of the late Louis Albert and Phoebe Olive (Struble) Dalrymple. Mac was a graduate of Newton High School in Newton, NJ, class of 1943. He went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Navy ROTC V12 Program, graduating from Yale University with a B.S. in Naval Science, then served in the U.S. Navy attaining the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade, earning the American Area and Victory Medals. After discharge from the Navy, Mac attended Rutgers University and graduated in 1948 with a B.S. in Agriculture Engineering. Mac then found employment in the Utility Industry with Jersey Central Power & Light (formerly New Jersey Power and Light), first as a Farm Representative, then Industrial Sales Representative, and lastly as manager of Consumer Services, Bay Division, retiring in 1987 with 38 years’ service. Mac’s hobbies of gardening and carpentry were more a passion than hobby. He always had large gardens, the garden at their Andover home being nearly a quarter-acre that he meticulously maintained without the luxury of power equipment. Mac built their Andover home (with a significant amount of help from family and friends), and then doubled it in size for his expanding family. While in his 50’s, he completely remodeled a 100-year old farmhouse in Wall Township, NJ. When that was done, he still spent weeks at a time helping his sons with their own building projects, from simple additions to restorations to full new home construction. Mac was very involved in his community. He served as Chief of the Andover Borough Fire Department, President of the Andover Kiwanis Club, and as President of the Middletown, NJ, Chamber of Commerce. Mac was instrumental in the building of the ballfield for Andover Little League. He was also the announcer for the Andover Arrows Youth Football teams. Mac was active in the Boy Scouts, having been a Boy Scout and Sea Scout himself until his leaders were called off to war. He was Scoutmaster of Troop 81 in Andover for 10 years, assistant scoutmaster of Troop 128 in Middletown for 5 years, a District Commissioner for 2 years, and he proudly saw all four of his sons attain the rank of Eagle Scout. Post retirement, Mac’s passion in life was serving at The Historic Village at Allaire in Farmingdale, NJ. For 19 years Mac mainly served as an interpreter in the carpenter’s shop, but also made various 19th century type toys to be sold for fund raising in the gift shop, fabricated several signs for the village buildings, and performed various maintenance duties around the facility. After moving to Lancaster County in 2006, Mac continued serving the community in the Friends of Lions, helping the local Lions Clubs with community events.
Mac is survived by his sons and their spouses, Jim and Susie, of Marathon, FL, Doug and the late Cindy, of Wakefield, Tom and Sarah, of Winston-Salem, NC, and Dick and Lorraine, of Huntingtown, MD; 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Douglas Dalrymple, and sisters, Jean Dalrymple, Barbara Dalrymple, Nancy Luse, and Karen Lee. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community Ellingsworth Auditorium, 625 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, PA, with a time of visitation from 10:30 – 11:00. A Celebration of Life Service is tentatively planned for Saturday, November 11, 2017, at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton, NJ, 07860, with interment to follow in Branchville Cemetery, Branchville, NJ. The family kindly requests that you not send flowers, but instead consider a donation in Mac’s memory to The Historic Village at Allaire, 4263 Atlantic Avenue, Farmingdale, NJ, 07727. (Please make checks payable to Allaire Village.) Arrangements entrusted to Dewald Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., Quarryville. Online guestbook at www.dewalds.com. Comments are closed.
