Katherine Galbreath Armes Holliday went to be with her Lord and Savior May 27, 2023, at age 100 at Quarryville, PA. She was born October 3, 1922, in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of Roland and Jean Armes. She is preceded in death by her husband, the Reverend Charles B. Holliday, Jr, and her three beloved siblings, the Reverend John Armes, the Reverend Willard Armes, and Janet Ludlam. She is survived by four children: Tom and Jean Troxell (Sun City West, AZ), Charles B. III and Debra Holliday, (Atlantic Beach, FL), Don and Katherine Beebe (Flourtown, PA) and Thomas G. and Sharon Holliday (Alexandria, VA); 13 grandchildren and 37 living great grandchildren. She took great comfort in seeing her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren trusting and serving Jesus. Kay grew up in Philadelphia but enjoyed summers with her family at Lake George, NY. She was a graduate of Wilson College, where she was very active in choir and athletics. She worked for GE on submarines in a shipyard during WWII.
She then attended Faith Theological Seminary, where she met her future husband, the late Reverend Charles B.Holliday, Jr. - as she said, “on a street corner in Wilmington, Delaware when he smiled at her”. They were married June 7, 1947, and served the Lord faithfully as husband and wife in their pastoral ministries until retirement at the age of 70. They served at Fairview Reformed Presbyterian Church Industry, PA for five years, an interim in Philadelphia where Charlie accepted a position at the Independent Board for Presbyterian Foreign Missions along with pulpit supply at Third Reformed Presbyterian Church before going to First R. P. Church, Pittsburgh, PA for thirty-eight years. Kay also served in Presbyterial and Synodical for the RPC, ES. They were well loved and respected by their congregations and saw many come to Jesus and grow to serve Him in their various callings. They held on to their conservative reformed convictions with a warmth and dedication that proved winsome and appealing to many. They had a faithful commitment to missions, youth work and outreach and were an effective team. Kay had a keen mind, was an avid reader and learner, and had endless energy. She took art lessons and learned to paint in her 70’s and continued her choral participation until age 98. Kay served faithfully by Charlie’s side, whether it was leading the choir, singing solos, leading music for Bible School or Camp, visiting the sick and lonely, offering biblical counsel, leading Bible Studies, organizing women’s activities, and endless entertaining in their home. All four of their children with their spouses have followed them into full time Christian ministry. Charlie and Kay retired to Silver Bay, NY in 1993. Kay quickly became involved in many activities including Book Club, Chorale, and painting classes. She also was involved with Redeemer PCA in Queensbury, NY. and traveled with Charlie as he preached in other congregations in upstate New York and Vermont. In 2015, They relocated to the Quarryville (PA) Presbyterian Retirement Community, where they were welcomed and cared for in a wonderful way. As the aging process took its toll on Kay these past couple years and she has lost so much of her memory and independence it has been heartwarming to see her heart anchored and hopeful in her sure and certain anticipation of the day she would see Jesus. A Funeral Service will take place at Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church, 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville, PA on Thursday, July 13, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:30 - 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
