Karl Dietrich Linde passed away on September 21, 2018, at the age of 97. The son of the late Karl Wilhelm and Ella Schweers Linde. Known as K.D. or Dieter, Karl was born on June 21, 1921 in Gera, Germany. He was drafted into the German Army during World War II, where he served on both fronts and finished out the war in a prisoner of war camp in England. After World War II, Karl emigrated to Lancaster County in 1950 and later became a United States citizen. He met his wife Else Lohmann and they married in 1952. Karl and Else bought a farm near Kirkwood, Pennsylvania in 1956, where they started the Lindenhof Guernsey farm. Karl and Else resided there for the duration of their 65 year marriage. He was a respected, hardworking and talented dairyman. Lindenhof Guernseys was well known among dairy breeders receiving multiple local, state and national honors for milk, protein and butterfat production throughout his career. In 1976 he received the Lancaster county soil conservationist of the year award. Karl was a dedicated family man. He and Else believed the family and the farm to be the biggest blessing of their lives. His family knew him as their dearly loved Opa. Karl deeply appreciated beauty in nature, encouraging all to observe and appreciate the wonders of the world around them. He was a brilliant gardener and his homestead is filled with multiple varieties of perennial flowers, shrubs and trees that he planted over many years. Karl was also a witty poet, sending handwritten poems and letters of encouragement, both in English and German, to family and friends. He enjoyed listening and studying classical music.
He will be dearly missed. Karl Dieter is survived by his wife Else Linde, his children Karl (Lynn) Linde, Gilbert (MaryAnn) Linde, Mildred (Jim) Widmann, and Axel (Susan) Linde and his 14 grandchildren Macy Ketcham, Karl Linde, Clarissa Linde, Sarah Palka, Cooper Linde, Brent Linde, Elizabeth Alter, Dietrich Linde, Amanda Groff, Caroline Vining, Rebekah Johnson, Bethlehem Linde, Anna Linde, and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 3 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Little Britain Presbyterian Church, 255 Little Britain Church Rd, Peach Bottom Pa. where he was a member. A memorial service will be held at Little Britain Presbyterian Church on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at 2PM officiated by the Rev. Tom Milligan.
