Karen M. Swinehart, age 67 of Strasburg, PA, passed away at UPMC Community Osteopathic Hospital in Harrisburg on Monday, September 23, 2024, after her brief battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family. Karen was a dedicated wife, mother, sister, grammy, aunt and friend. She was the wife of Robert D. “Bob” Swinehart, Jr., with whom she celebrated 48 years of marriage on May 1st. Karen was born in Lancaster, the daughter of the late William Jay Stewart & Virginia Braungart Stewart. She graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School and the Lancaster School of Cosmetology. She spent the majority of her career in healthcare, serving others. She worked primarily as a Patient Care Representative, starting out at St. Joseph Hospital, which later became Lancaster Regional Medical Center and then UPMC. She also kept her cosmetology license active over the years. She took great pride in her work, always reliable with a welcoming, warm smile and a friend to all her coworkers. Karen enjoyed camping at Tucquan Family Campground, the beach, reading, and frogs. But most of all she loved spending time with her family, to whom she was ever devoted. Family meant the world to her. And she meant the world to her family. She took life one day at a time, a phrase she used most often and was quick to remind others to do as well.
Surviving besides her husband are two children: Daniel “Dan” Swinehart at home, Kimberly “Kim” wife of Darren Nettleton of Mountville; two grandchildren: Brielle & Coleton Nettleton; two brothers: Kevin husband of Roseanne Breneman Stewart and Matthew husband of Cindy Wise Stewart both of Lancaster; and sister in law: Mary Swinehart of Elizabethtown. She was preceded in death by a sister Maureen Peterman, who just passed away on September 1st after her own long battle with cancer, and by her niece Amanda Stewart Manuel. She is also survived by 4 nephews – Ryan, A.B., Travis, and Henry – and by five grandnephews and grandnieces – Christopher, Nevaeh, Carter, Cassidy and Ryan Junior. Karen's funeral service will take place at Reynolds & Shivery Funeral Home, 144 East State Street, Quarryville, PA, on Wednesday, October 2nd at 1 p.m. with a viewing time from 12 p.m. until time of service. Pastor Blake Deibler will officiate. Private interment will take place at Zion U.C.C. Cemetery, Old and Winter Hill Rds., Strasburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society. Comments are closed.
