John W. Douts of Fairfax, Va., died at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on Friday, June 13, 2014. He was 67. Mr. Douts was born in Lancaster, a son of the late William and Ida Douts. He lived in Chestnut Level before moving to Virginia. He was a 1965 graduate of Solanco High School. Mr. Douts earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Delaware and a master's degree in landscaping and horticulture through the Longwood Gardens program and the University of Delaware.
He served with the U.S. Army and completed a tour of duty in Vietnam. Mr. Douts established a landscaping business in Fairfax. His love of flowers and gardening was shared by his late aunt, Eleanor Book. He enjoyed searching for antiques and collectibles, cooking, and baking. Mr. Douts is survived by his sister, Mary Douts DelGiorno, wife of Walt DelGiorno of Wilmington, Del.; his brother, Roy B., husband of Kay Douts; and two nephews, B.J. Douts and Jeff Douts. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, at St. Catherine's Catholic Cemetery, St. Catherine Dr., Quarryville. Friends may visit with the family during a luncheon following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Ambrose Catholic Church's building fund, 3901 Woodburn Rd., Annadale VA 22003, or the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, Liver Transplant Program, Development Office, 3535 Market St., Suite 750, Philadelphia PA 19104.
