Horace Walter Pyle of Quarryville died on Friday, November 20, 2015. He was 89. Mr. Pyle was born in Concord Township, a son of the late Ernest and Irene Bond Pyle. His family moved to Colerain Township in 1941. He served with the U.S. Army Rangers in the Philippines during World War II. Wounded in combat, he spent 11 months in a hospital before being discharged. "I was hit in the leg," he said in a 2012 interview. He and his family farmed about 300 acres, bought and sold cows, and transported Amish neighbors. He and one of his brothers also bought a farm in Tioga County where they raised Christmas trees. The family sold the farm in the early 1980s and Mr. Pyle moved to East Drumore Township. Some years later, he began working for Noble Rd. Milking, delivering milkhouse supplies. He kept that job for nearly two decades, working five days a week. He gave up the job when he was 88. Mr. Pyle was a member of the Pennsylvana Farm Bureau and the Disabled American Veterans. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Edna M. McCommon Pyle; two daughters, Connie Pyle of Conestoga and Donna, wife of Michael Payne of Kirkwood; three grandchildren, Mike II, husband of Anna Payne of Colora, Md., Joseph Payne of Kirkwood, and Carley, wife of Joshua Miller of Port Deposit, Md.; a brother; and a sister.
Five brothers are deceased. Friends may call at Dewald Funeral and Cremation Services, 227 W. 4th St., Quarryville, from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 24.
