Hazel Hart Pryer, 101, formerly of Quarryville and Strasburg Township, passed away on Friday, November 3, 2017, at Moravian Manor. She was the wife of the late Carl Bernhart Pryer, sharing 45 years of marriage at the time of his passing in 1984. Born in the Hickory Hill area near Oxford, Chester County, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Ethel (Anderson) Hart of Quarryville. Hazel had the unique opportunity of graduating from high school twice. She first attended Colerain High School and graduated from 11th grade. Because 12th grade wasn’t offered at Colerain High School, Hazel then attended Quarryville High School and graduated from 12th grade. In her early years, Hazel worked at the former Hamilton Watch Company of Lancaster, where she met her husband. Over the years she was a homemaker and also later worked at the former Precision Time Company of Strasburg. Even though Hazel did not herself serve in the military, she was very patriotic, writing hundreds of letters to her brothers and family members while they served in the military. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, Strasburg Township, for over 70 years. Hazel was also a member of the Robert Fulton Chapter #446 Order of the Eastern Star. Hazel is survived by 3 children, Thomas C. (Marianne) Pryer, of Havre de Grace, MD, Donald C. (Paula) Pryer, of Lancaster, and Sheila (Robert) Brittingham, of Selbyville, DE; two siblings, Doris J. Starr, of Lancaster, and Raymond C. Hart, of Quarryville; 8 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon L. Aukamp; sisters, Evelyn Greenleaf and Ethel Burger; and brothers, Charles, Donald, and Norman Hart.
A Funeral Service and Eastern Star Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 9, 2017, at Dewald Funeral and Cremation Services, 227 West 4th Street, Quarryville, PA, with a viewing from 10 – 11 a.m. Interment will immediately follow the service at Zion United Church of Christ Cemetery, Strasburg Township. The family would like to thank Moravian Manor for the wonderful care that our mother received during her stay. The family kindly asks that you not send flowers, but instead consider a donation in Hazel’s memory to Zion United Church of Christ, 900 Winter Hill Road, Strasburg, PA 17579, or to Masonic Village Hospice, One Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown, PA 17022.
