Dr. Richard Henry "Dick" Stoneback Sr. of Strattanville died at DuBois Regional Medical Center on October 25, 2014. He was 81. Dr. Stoneback was born in East Greenville, a son of the late William Henry and Laura Neiman Stoneback. He graduated from Quakertown High School and earned a bachelor of science degree from Penn State University. He earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School in 1958. Dr. Stoneback bought a farm near Oxford and established his veterinary practice, specializing in large animal medicine. Early in his career, he was on the staff of the University of Pennsylvania's Veterinary School and mentored many students.
He was an Arabian horse breeder for more than 50 years, promoting the breed throughout the United States. He was also an expert in the breeding of dairy goats. Dr. Stoneback was a member of the Arabian Horse Foundation, a charter member and past president of the Eastern Crabbet Arabian Horse Society, and founder of the Eastern Amateur Arabian Horse Show Circuit. In 1988, he helped found the Lighthouse Youth Center in Oxford and served on the center's board of directors for many years. He retired in 2003, selling his farm and moving to Strattanville. There he became a member of the First Baptist Church of Clarion. In addition to his promotion of the Arabian horse breed, he enjoyed reading, gardening, and cooking. Dr. Stoneback is survived by his wife of 59 years, Margaret Louise "Marge" Stevenson Stoneback; his daughter, Peggy, wife of Paul Beardmore of Severna Park, Md.; his son, Randy Stoneback, partner of Laura Anderson of Strattanville; his daughter-in-law, Donna Stoneback of Oxford; six grandchildren, Ricky Stoneback, Samantha Stoneback, Drew Beardmore, Michael Beardmore, Justin Stoneback, and Misty Brown; his great-granddaughter, Charlotte Rose Stoneback; two sisters, Pat, wife of Kenneth Worthington of Doylestown, and Laurene, wife of Ray Hunsicker of Canton; and his aunt, Lila Bittenbender of Red Hill. Two sons, Dr. Richard H. Stoneback Jr. and Gary Bosarge; and his sister, Doris Steich, are deceased. A memorial service was held from the First Baptist Church of Clarion at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 1, with the Rev. Jason Hunter officiating.
