Dr. James E. Pennington, Sr., 91 of Quarryville, entered into rest on Tuesday, December 12, 2017. Born in Sturgills, North Carolina, Jim was the eighth of ten children. Shortly after his birth, his parents, the late Rohe V. and Stella (Eller) Pennington, moved their large family to a farm in Hensel, Pennsylvania. Dr. Pennington began his education in the East Drumore Elementary School and graduated from Quarryville High School. Following graduation, Jim went into the U.S. Army Air Corps and served his country in the Aviation Cadet Program. After an honorable discharge, he worked for P.P.&L. for several years. Determined to continue his education, he was accepted at Franklin and Marshall College and graduated with a Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from Temple University in 1959. After graduation, Jim came back to his hometown of Quarryville and opened his practice. He served in the community as a dentist for 43 years. Pennington Dental Associates is currently operated by his son, Dr. James E. Pennington, Jr. Throughout his life, Jim not only served the community in a professional capacity, but also in several other areas. He was quite active with the youth in a variety of sports and recreational programs. He coached and managed baseball and basketball teams in Quarryville and throughout Lancaster County. Jim was active in the Quarryville American Legion Post # 603, served on the board of United Way, and was Chairman of the Board for the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge for 28 years. He was an honorary Kentucky Colonial and served on the Providence Planning Commission. Jim was a faithful member of Zion U.C.C.
Dr. Jim is survived by his wife, Betty (Quigley) Pennington; a son, Dr. James E. Jr., husband of JoAnn Pennington; 4 grandchildren: Caitlyn and Jaclyn Pennington, Dusty Stively and Josh, husband of Kim Stively; 6 great-grandchildren; 4 stepchildren: Barb, Steve, Deb, and Jeff; and a brother, Bryan Pennington. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia K. Pennington; a daughter, Eve P. Pennington; 4 brothers, and 4 sisters. A service celebrating Doc’s life will take place at Dewald Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., 227 W. 4th St., Quarryville on Friday, December 22, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. The family will visit with friends from 3-4:00 p.m. Interment will be private.
