Bertha Virginia Elizabeth Adams passed away Sunday, June 16, at her Willow Street home. She was 88. She was the wife of the late Marvin I. Adams Sr. They were married 51 years before his death in 2001. Born in Millers, Md., she was the daughter of the late Maurice and Bertha Mae Barnes. She graduated from Manchester High School in Manchester, Md., and attended York Business College. She was a homemaker, but also worked for the late Alice Hess at the former Hess’ Motel below Willow Street, and as an assistant to the president at the Water Street Rescue Mission. For decades, she could be found every spring and fall working for the election board in Pequea Township as it conducted elections. Mrs. Adams enjoyed gardening and taking care of her many flowers. She loved to make crafts with her mother. She was dedicated to her church, Boehm’s United Methodist, for some 65 years. She served as the Sunday School secretary for many years. She was a life member of the Boehm’s Chapel Society and every fall for many years she was the official greeter at the society’s Apple Festival. She regularly attended Rawlinsville Camp Meeting and worked every Boehm’s Sunday, while she was able, in the boarding house, serving the preachers’ table.
Mrs. Adams was the mother of Marvin I. Adams Jr., husband of the Rev. Helen Adams, of Martic Township, and Peggy M. Stiffel, wife of George Stiffel, of Willow Street. She was the grandmother of Abigail H. Adams, of Pittsburgh, whom she dearly loved. She grew up with brothers John L. and Fred M. Barnes, who predeceased her. A third brother, Robert, died when he was a toddler. She was a devoted caretaker for her mother before her death in 1981. Mrs. Adams is survived by three sisters-in-law: Jean Keller, of Providence Township; Jean Adams, of Martic Township; and Geneva Barnes, of Greensboro, N.C. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, who knew her lovingly as “Aunt Sis.” Sis, or Sister, were nicknames given to her by her brothers, and “Sis” was how she was known to members on both sides of her family. Her family thanks the devoted group of women who cared for Mrs. Adams in the last years of her life, enabling her to stay in her home, which was her wish. The family also thanks Caring Hospice Services and By Your Side for their many kindnesses. Services will be held at Boehm’s Church, 13 W. Boehms Road, Willow Street, at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 22, with the Rev. Joan Trout and Rev. Helen Adams officiating and the Rev. Dennis Snovel delivering the message. There will be a viewing at 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. at the church. Please omit flowers. Memorials may be made to the Boehm’s Chapel Society, P.O. Box 272, Willow Street, PA 17584; Boehm’s Church, 13 W. Boehms Road, Willow Street, PA 17584; Caring Hospice, 101 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17603; or By Your Side, 218 B W. Main St., Leola, PA 17540.
