Barbara Jean Johanningsmeier, 89, of Quarryville, PA, formerly of South Lyon, MI, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. Born in Detroit, she was the daughter of the late Ray Emery Greenwald and Rhea Scott (nee Graham) Greenwald. Barbara was a graduate of Walled Lake High School, class of 1952. For many years she served as the Vice President and Bookkeeper of their family business, Turfgrass Inc. Having a heart to serve others, Barbara was very active in community service and was a member of the Tuesday Club of South Lyon. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of South Lyon. She served as a Stevens Minister, supported the local blood drive, chopped countless onions for the Cruise In, helped make crafts with children in the tent at the local farmers market and traveled to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation 7 years in a row to work with Re-Member. There she built bunkbeds, painted, served in the kitchen and anything else needed. After her move to Pennsylvania in 2022, she supported the Evangelism and Outreach team of Wrightsdale Baptist Church preparing lunches for teachers and staff in the local area schools.
A hobbyist, Barbara loved to paint. Her favorite medium was oil. She also enjoyed making her own greeting cards, assembling picture puzzles and completing crossword puzzles. She is survived by her sons, Duane Richards, of Havelock, NC, and Keith Richards, of Grand Rapids, MI; daughters, Pamela (M. Craig) Williams, of Quarryville, PA, and René (Mark) Culross, of Ft. Worth, TX; her “bonus children”, David Johanningsmeier, of Gaylord, MI, Douglas (Julie) Johanningsmeier, of Brighton, MI, Dwight (Dawn) Johanningsmeier, of Queen Creek, AZ, Pamela (Richard) Smith, of Livonia, MI, and Daniel (Amy) Johanningsmeier, of Howell, MI. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and a brother, Timothy (Hazel) Greenwald, of Clermont, FL. In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Emery Greenwald, Jr. A Memorial Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of South Lyon Michigan on October 19, 2024. A time of visitation is planned from 10:00am-11:00am followed by the memorial service at 11:00am. A luncheon will be served at the church following the memorial service. Interment will be private.
