Danna L. Newton, 55, of Holtwood, formerly of Valley View, PA, passed away on September 11, 2017, at her home. She was the loving companion of William Wayne Fisher, sharing 14 years together.
Born in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, she was the daughter of the late Dana R. and Shirley May (Hubler) Cole. Danna was a 1980 graduate of Tri Valley High School. She went on to find employment in the health care field as a caregiver, serving in this field for at least 18 years. In her early years, Danna loved deer hunting and fishing. She also enjoyed the outdoors and several cats and dogs she had as pets. Danna was grateful for the opportunities she had in her occupation to care for others. Lawrence (Larry) L. Jackson, 73, of Silver Spring Township, Cumberland County, passed away unexpectedly while on a 2-week fishing and rafting trip on the Goodnews River, Alaska, his 10th such adventure to wild Alaska.
He was born in Camden, New Jersey to the late David B. and Nadine G. Jackson of Quarryville, PA. He is survived by his wife Jane I. Earle, his brother Richard H. Jackson and wife Joanne, and several cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved great aunt Ruby A. Hanson and grandmother Lelia H. Guiles, whom he will be buried alongside. Larry graduated from Solanco High School, Elizabethtown College, and attended Millersville University. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War, working as a clerk at the Pentagon. He was an area fisheries manager in the southcentral region for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, retiring in 2004 after 30 years of service. He had previously worked for the consultants Ichthyological Associates in Drumore PA, where he met his wife, who had moved from Philadelphia to work as a biologist at the firm. Larry grew up in rural southern Lancaster County, enjoying all the outdoors had to offer and instilling in him a true sense of adventure. He played and hunted in nearby fields, and fished and swam in the West Branch Octoraro Creek. More recently, Larry loved kayaking and fishing on the Susquehanna River and Conodoguinet Creek. Larry and Jane enjoyed watching deer, wild turkey, turtles, and other animals and birds among the trees and wildflowers in their yard; and walking and bicycling in local parks. They loved to travel. They spent week-long winter vacations visiting Florida and Texas, and later, several Turks and Caicos and Bahamas out islands in Larry's pursuit of the elusive bonefish, bird watching and relaxing. More recently, they traveled on small boat cruises to the Columbia River, Mexico's Sea of Cortex, and Panama and Costa Rica. Larry accompanied Jane to several scientific conferences in the western US, vacationing afterwards at nearby scenic areas and national parks. Philip M. Weaver of Lancaster died mid-August after a long illness. Born July 14, 1944, Phil was the son of the late Dr. E. Mark and Thelma G. Shank Weaver. Phil is survived by three siblings, Kathleen J. wife of Robert Bucher of Willow Street, David A. husband of Alice of Quarryville, Linda J. wife of Robert Simpson of Lancaster; three sons and three grandchildren, Christopher Alan lives in Houston, TX with his two children, Taylor and Parker, Matthew Douglas and his wife Alexandra live with their son, Brandon in Portland OR, and Kyle Mark resides in Ohio. A graduate of Elizabethtown College, he worked at Armstrong World Industries, and after moving to the Cleveland area in Ohio, where he lived for many years, was employed by the Ohio Desk Company. Howard W. “Junie” Hall, Jr., 88, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, September 11, 2017, at his residence with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Mary-Jane (Rankin) Hall, sharing 60 years of marriage together. Born in Colerain, he was the son of the late Howard W., Sr., and Emma Catherine (Levering) Hall. Howard was a graduate of Penn Manor High School, class of 1947. After high school, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1955, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant, and earning the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He then went on to be employed for 30 years by Garden Spot Motor Company as Service Manager, and then as Maintenance Director of Ned Bard Trucking, retiring in 1999 with 15 years’ service. Shirley Joan Bomberger, 81, of New Providence, entered into rest on Friday, September 8, 2017. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Sylvester and Sadie (Graybill) Nolt. She and her husband, J. Harold Bomberger were wed on Valentine’s Day in 1954 and they were married for over 63 years. Shirley had been employed for 22 years as a secretary by First Assembly of God and New Life Assembly of God churches in Lancaster, where she was also a soloist, choir member, and Sunday School teacher. She had attended Grace Baptist Church and New Providence Church of God. She enjoyed music, baking, crafts, traveling, and reading. Barbara Ann Rodeffer, 79, of Holtwood, was called Home on Thursday, September 7, 2017. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Melvin and Ruth (Wells) Blackburn. She was married for 50 years to the late Vernon Rodeffer who died in 2007. Barbara was a homemaker. Having lived in western Pennsylvania most of her life, she had been actively involved with the Christian Women’s Club in Uniontown. She was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. Barbara enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and traveling. She was especially fond of her four-legged friend, buddy. Dennis R. Plastino, Jr, 38 of Willow Street PA, passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at his home. Born in Lancaster PA, he was the son of Dennis R. and Fay Hackman Plastino. Dennis was a self-employed mechanic. An artistic individual, he enjoyed designing tattoos. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, playing golf, and putting models together. Cadillac cars were one of his passions. He loved his 2 pit bulls, Baby Girl and Bandit. Known as Uncle Den Den to his nieces and nephews, they were an important part of his life. Beatrice Boyce Schreiber, 89, of Quarryville, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 8, 2017 while under the care of Hospice and Community Care and the staff of Brethren Village. Born and raised in Collins, south of Quarryville, she was a daughter of the late Melvin C. and Mary H.S. Boyce. She was married to Charles Schreiber Jr. for 38 years until his death in September 1987. Beatrice (Bebe) graduated as a registered nurse in 1949 from Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. She was office nurse for Robert Helm M. D. in Quarryville for many years. She also worked for Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community and as a private duty nurse for many residents and friends in the southern Lancaster County area. After returning to Millersville University, she received her B.S. degree in 1972 and was nurse in the Solanco School District for 21 years until her retirement in 1993. Robert J. Hess, 81, of Kirkwood entered into rest on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at Susquehanna Health in Williamsport after a lengthy illness. Born in Little Britain, he was the son of the late Ralph and Villa (Keys) Hess. He was married to Lydia M. (Jones) Hess for over 63 years. Robert had been a local truck driver and had also been a mushroom farmer. He retired from Cedar Hill Quarry. Bob enjoyed taking hunting and fishing trips with Clair Charles to Alaska and other places around the country. He also enjoyed restoring antique tractors. Henry Lee Young ,94, of Peach Bottom passed away on August 31st at Hospice & Community Care. Henry was born in Emmerton, MD, son of the late Lee B. and Jenny Kilby Young. Henry served with the US Army two years during the Korean conflict. Henry was a lifelong dairy farmer, the last 43 years in partnership with his sons Matthew & David in Little Britain. Except for the final weeks of his life, Henry was at work on the family farm early each morning where he spent his days building and repairing. Henry was an avid hunter and fisherman until the last months of his life. His favorite spot was his quiet mountain cabin in Fulton County. Henry was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church in Quarryville for almost 77 years where he served in many ways, including as an elder for 44 years. Henry's life was characterized by an unwavering faith in Christ, hard work, humble contentment, and service to his family, church and community. |
