Clyde K. "Tom" Weitzel of Oxford died at Maple Farms Nursing Home, Akron, on Friday, June 12, 2015. He was 88. Mr. Weitzel was born in Rawlinsville, a son of the late Paul W. and Anna E. Eshelman Weitzel. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Weitzel worked for the Chrysler Corporation, Newark, Del., for 23 years before retiring in 1994. He was a member of the Oxford United Methodist Church and Oxford Masonic Lodge 353. Mr. Weitzel enjoyed working in the yard, refinishing furniture, and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his son, Rodney, husband of Denise Weitzel of Ephrata; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; his brother, William Weitzel of New Freedom; and two sisters, Lois Aukamp of Quarryville and Martha Frey of Willow Street; Johnathon Eugene Woods, Sr., 27, of North East, MD, passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, MD. Born in West Chester, PA, he was the son of Larry W. and Illiam Yvette Perez Woods of North East, MD. Johnathon was Baptist by faith. He enjoyed playing the guitar, singing and football. Johnathon was an avid Philadelphia Eagle’s fan. He loved his children. George Leonard Spade, Sr., 69, of Quarryville, entered into rest peacefully on Wednesday, June10, 2015. Born in Manheim, he was a son of the late Amos and Katherine (Spayd) Spade. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Donna (Lefever) Spade. George had been employed by the former Sperry-Rand Corporation for over 36 years. He was a member of Mt. Eden Lutheran Church and was a train and western cowboy enthusiast. In addition to his wife, he is survived by 4 children: George, Jr. (Corinna) Spade of Holtwood; Tonya (Keith) Titherington of Quarrville; Stacy (David) Kauffman of Quarryville; and Matt (Crystal) Spade of Peach Bottom. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers and 6 sisters. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters and a brother. Evelyn Pennington Burkle 87, of Sharpley, entered into rest on May 28, 2015 at her home. Born in Lancaster, PA, she was the daughter of the late Rohe V. and Stella (Eller) Pennington.
She received her B.A. degree in 1949 from Berea College in Kentucky. She worked as a physical education teacher at Wilmington Friends School in the early 1960s before devoting her remaining years to volunteer work, primarily with the American Cancer Society. Evelyn was married to William C. Burkle for 45 years until his death in 1994. Betty Ann Schroder, 84, of West Grove, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, June 4, 2015. Born in Quarryville she was the daughter of the late Frank and Lillie E. (long) Kauffman. Her husband, Harry Joseph Schroder, Sr. passed away in 1997. Betty was a homemaker. She was a member of Jennersville Church of the Brethren. Betty is survived by sons: Jerry Schroder husband of Karen of Nottingham and Randy Schroder of Parkesburg. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and a brother, John Kauffman. She was preceded in death by a son, Harry Schroder, Jr. along with 1 sister and 3 brothers. Marianne Walter, 80, of Airville, PA, and wife of Donald C. Walter, passed onto her eternal home on Friday, June 5th, 2015. Marianne was the daughter of the late Fred W. and Mary (Rohrer) Linton of Quarryville, PA. Donald and Marianne were married for 61 years. Marianne was the mother of five children: Donna Downs (Dave), Carol Laucks (Steve), Roger (Lori), Brenda Rains (Dale), and Annette Keeney (Jim); Grandmother of six: Shawn Waltimyer (Kellie), Kelly Downs, Andrew Downs, Brooke Keeney, Tyler Keeney, and Chance Rains; Great Grandmother of two: Isaac and Annika Waltimyer. She also will be missed by her loyal canine companion Scooter. Marianne is also survived by her sisters, Arlene (Linton) Hastings and Rose Marie (Linton) Moore, and brother Fred Linton Jr. as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Shortly after their marriage, Marianne and Donnie moved to New Providence, PA where they raised their family on a small farm before relocating to York County. Their farming in York County consisted of crops, beef, goats, and for a short time, dairy cattle. Marianne enjoyed spending time with her family and family gatherings. She was a lover of flowers, birds and all animals. Her best times were spent in her flower gardens or tending to her goats. She loved baking Whoopie Pies, which her family greatly enjoyed. She crocheted and donated hundreds of baby items to Caps of Love. In her earlier years, Marianne was a 4-H leader in both Lancaster and York counties. She retired from Penn State Cooperative Association - DHIA as a milk tester. Marianne served as Church Elder and Treasurer at Chanceford Presbyterian Church, and participated in Golden Girls and the 8 O'clock Circle. Robert C. “Bob” Sprout, Jr., 64, of Kirkwood, went home to be with the Lord at home with his family by his side on Sunday, June 7, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Lancaster, he was a son of the late Robert Sr., and Mary (Smith) Sprout. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Betty Jane (Mowery) Sprout. Bob was an Armstrong retiree and had proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and cooking. He had coached little league baseball and tee ball and loved watching sports and spending time with his family. Bob had attended Wesley Church in Quarryville. Alta M. Lefever, 95, died Saturday, June 6, 2015 at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community where she resided. She was the widow of Harry J. Lefever who died May 2, 1990. Born in Bart Township she was the daughter of the late Amos M. and Ada Florence Hassel Eisenberger. She was a member of Mt. Eden Lutheran Church, Quarryville, and the Strasburg Senior Citizens. Alta worked with her husband on the farm for 22 years, and then operated a gift shop at Meadow Brook Market for 14 years. She was skilled at making quilts, afghans, and doilies, and enjoyed country music. G. Wilson Harris, 89, of Manheim PA, passed away on June 3, 2015 at Pleasant View Retirement Community following a lengthy illness. He and his wife Marian Griest Harris celebrated 63 years of marriage until her passing on May 2, 2010. He was born in Colora, MD a son of the late James Wilson and Ida Lewis Harris. Wilson had been employed as a portable feed mill operator for Herr’s Mill in Nottingham for 15 years. He then worked in maintenance for Agway Inc. in Manheim for 22 years, retiring in 1988. Wilson was also instrumental in working with his wife in her business, the Bridal Boutique in Manheim. He was the ideal dad, assisting and working with his sons on their various projects. He was also an avid Phillies fan. Kathryn M. (McAvoy) Nicholl, 90, of Nottingham and formerly of Marmora, NJ, entered into rest on Monday, June 1, 2015 at her home. Born in Yeadon, PA, she was a daughter of the late James and Julia (Cusick) McAvoy. She was married to the late Robert A. Nicholl who passed away in 2002.
Kathryn was a homemaker and had worked in the Villanova University book store. She raised her family in Havertown and then retired to Marmora, NJ. She had been active in the St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Marmora, where she served in the legion of Mary and was also the treasurer of the mature adults for several years. Kathryn also volunteered for the Holy Redeemer food bank. |
