John R. Shuman of Pequea died at Hospice, Mount Joy, on April 4, 2014. He was 59. Dr. Shuman was born in Lancaster, a son of the late John W. Jr. and Blanche L. Henry Shuman of Holtwood. His grandparents were the late Richard L. and Ruth I. Shrom Henry of Chestnut Level and the late John W. Sr. and Helen M. Gaul Shuman of Quarryville. He grew up in southern Lancaster County, where he played baseball and softball, enjoyed fishing and hunting, and collected things to look at under his microscope. Dr. Shuman graduated from Penn Manor High School in 1973, earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Millersville University in 1978, and earned a doctorate in environmental biology from Kansas State University in 1988. Robert W. Watters of Strasburg died on Monday, April 7, 2014. He was 87. Mr. Watters as born in Summerville, Mass., a son of the late William S. and Lena Watson Watters. He lived in southern Lancaster County before moving to Strasburg. He was a self-employed farmer who also did masonry and restoration work. Mr. Watters enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and horses. He and his wife raised more than 36 foster children in the United States and Canada. In 1987, he received the Maryland Governor's Citation Award for his dedication to children. Dolores M. Baker of Holtwood died at Lancaster General Hospital on Saturday, April 5, 2014. She was 80. Mrs. Baker was born in Philadelphia, a daughter of the late William and Cecelia Price Oates. She was an active member of Colerain Baptist Church, where she participated in the widows' group and release time. Mrs. Baker enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, baking, and studying the Bible. Thomas E. Mitchell of Paradise died on Wednesday, April 2, 2014, after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was 58. Mr. Mitchell was a son of Pauline E. Ober Mitchell of Paradise and the late William J. Mitchell. He was the grandson of the late Jacob R. and Anna M. Ritz Ober and the late William F. and Jenni M. Donley Mitchell. Ethel T. Daley of the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community died on Saturday, March 29, 2014. She was 90.
Mrs. Daley was born in Philadelphia, a daughter of the late Robert and Elizabeth Stancliffe Akins Turner. She grew up in Germantown and worked most of her life as a secretary for Leeds and Northrup in Philadelphia. Katherine M. "Kitty" Johns of Quarryville died on Thursday, April 3, 2014. She was 93.
Mrs. Johns was born in Camden, N.J., a daughter of the late Charles and Sarah Overly Westwood. She worked as a dorm housekeeper at Millersville University. Sylvia L. Glick of Marticville Rd., Pequea, died at home on Thursday, April 3, 2014. She was 42.
Mrs. Glick was born in Paradise, a daughter of the late Joseph S. and Annie Lapp Miller and the stepdaughter of Sarah Fisher Miller Swarey of Peach Bottom. She was a member of the Old Order Amish Church. Earl L. Hershey of Little Britain Township died at Hospice, Mount Joy, on Sunday, March 30, 2014. He was 85.
Mr. Hershey was a son of the late Ezra and Anna L. Landis Hershey. He grew up near Kirkwood. He moved to a farm in Little Britain Township in 1951, where he was a dairy farmer for most of his life. Roger L. Keys of Peach Bottom died at home on Friday, March 28, 2014, following a battle with cancer. He was 69. Mr. Keys was born in Narrows, Va., a son of the late Sheridan and Kathryn Stables Keys. He was a mechanic who worked at several garages. Most recently, he worked at Church's Garage, Peach Bottom. Katie F. Beiler of Vintage Rd., Christiana, died at home on Thursday, March 27, 2014. She was 74.
Mrs. Beiler was born in Gordonville, a daughter of the late Jacob S. and Katie Fisher Stoltzfoos. She was a member of the Old Order Amish Church. |
