Gladys E. Miller, 94, died Wednesday, January 9, 2019, an hour prior to her 95th birthday at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community.
She was the wife of the late H. John Miller who died June 30, 2010. They were married on October 11, 1941. Born in Colerain Township, she was the daughter of the late William and Edna Probst Dunkle. Her working career started on the farm, then as a seamstress for the Georgetown Sewing Factory, and the former Schick Corp., and lastly as a domestic. She was a member of Green Hill Sportsman Association. Gladys is survived by a son John M. Miller; and nieces and nephews. Richard S. “Dick” Cunningham, 81, of Nottingham, passed away on January 5, 2019 at Conestoga View Nursing and Rehabilitation. He was the beloved husband of Janet M. (Schlotzhauer) Cunningham, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Paul H. and Claire (Heisse) Cunningham. Dick was a graduate of J.P. McCaskey High School, class of 1955. After high school, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Millersville State Teacher’s College in 1959. He then went on to earn two master’s degrees, one in English and one in math, from Pepperdine University. Dick proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1963, and then the U.S. Air Force from 1963 to 1979. He then accepted a position as a hazmat specialist with the Department of the Army, retiring in 2005. After retirement, Dick was a substitute teacher in Solanco School District. In the 45 years that Dick worked for the U.S. Government he was able to travel the world. During this time, he learned to speak Thai. Due to his military service and civilian military service, Dick and Janet lived on Air Force bases and in numerous cities and towns across the United States and Hawaii. He was a member of Grace Church of East Petersburg and the American Legion. The last few years were difficult for Dick due to his health, but he had many wonderful adventures with Janet and lived a full life. Ruth J. Reardon, 90, of Mahanoy City and most recently Lititz, died peacefully on December 29, 2018 surrounded by family. Born in Mahanoy City on June 11, 1928, she was the beloved daughter of the late Edward and Alice (Greiner) Thomas. Her husband Leo died in December 1996. She was a business woman, owning and operating the Five Pointville Hotel and The End. With her husband Leo, she owned and operated the Historic GreenTree Inn and Hildy’s Tavern. Ruth never met a stranger and was a friend to all. She cherished her family and was a wonderful mother and devoted grandmother and great-grandmother. She lived a life full of laughter and fun. She enjoyed many summers at the bay, spending time at the beach, crabbing, and driving her boat. Mary Ruth Minchhoff, 95, of Quarryville, entered into rest on Monday, January 7, 2019. Born in Quarryville, she was the daughter of the late Ervin and Clara (Book) Rhoads.
Her husband, Francis A. Minchhoff, passed away in 2000. Mary Ruth graduated from Solanco High School and went to work for the former Hamilton Watch Company. She went on to work for over 33 years in the office of the former Jerome H. Rhoads Inc., now Rhoads Energy Corporation. She was a member of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church. Mary Ruth enjoyed sewing, knitting, and doing crafts. She is survived by a son, Michael F. Minchhoff (Delores), and a daughter, Diane R. Hogg (Herbert), along with grandchildren, Michael A., Megan, and Mindy, great grandchildren Jacoby, Chase, Alayna and Allison, a brother, Jerome and a sister, Rita. Glenna M. Brown, 79, of Luther Acres and formerly Lancaster, entered into rest on Saturday, January 5, 2019. Born in Lancaster County, she was the daughter of the late Glenn C. and Miriam E. (McClune) Riley. Glenna graduated class of 1957 from Solanco High School. After graduating she worked for the former Hubley Manufacturing Company. Following Hubley she was a homemaker for several years before going back to work as a waitress at several local establishments. Glenna enjoyed gardening, bird watching, playing games, and going to the Bay, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. James Harris Hamlin (Jim), 57, of Oxford, PA passed immediately into the arms of his Savior, the Lord Jesus on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at his home after an intense battle with prostate cancer. He was the husband of Suzanne Shepherd Hamlin with whom he shared 34 years of marriage. Born in Aurora, CO, he was the son of the late Frederick Joseph and Helen Gharrity Hamlin. Jim was employed as a Senior Vice President of Eagle Energy Systems, Kennett Square, PA. He was an active member of Bethany Presbyterian Church, Oxford where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of Trustees, Elder, and Moderator of the Session. Jim also served on the Board of Bethany Christian School. Jim (Hammer) was also a member of the Kennett Square Golf and Country Club from 2005 – 2016. Jim had a passion for golf, loved spending time with family, traveled extensively, and enjoyed sports, reading, surf fishing and the beach. Shawn Patrick Boyer, 47, of Quarryville, entered into rest unexpectedly on January 1, 2019. Born in Trenton, New Jersey, he was the son of Eleanore D. (Ketterer) Boyer and the late David James Boyer. He was married to his loving wife, Donna (Hinkle) Boyer on November 17, 2018. Shawn had a passion for painting aircrafts. His impressive work on Pitcairn Mailwing planes are on display in many museums, including the Smithsonian. His love for painting aircrafts began at Reese Aircraft, where he worked for 20 years. He then went on to manage the paint department at Sikorsky Aircraft. Shawn loved fast cars and spending time on his boat with friends and family. Robert W. “Bob” Eckardt, 95, passed away on Sunday, December 30, 2018, at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. Born in Philadelphia, PA he was the son of George and Lilian Eckardt of Frankford, PA. Bob was a graduate of Frankford High School, Drexel University, and Westminster Theological Seminary, Glenside, PA. He retired from pastoral ministry in 2002 after serving churches in Bellmawr, NJ, Evergreen Park, IL, Wilmington, DE, Cedar Falls, IA, and Whitinsville MA. He was a member of the Orthodox Presbytery Church since its inception in 1936. Bob is survived by his wife, Mary Youngman Eckardt; a son, Robert Youngman Eckardt; and a son, Richard George Eckardt also surviving are 6 grandchildren: Erica Pinter, Emily Yann, Ethan Eckardt, Rachel Super, Zachary Eckardt, Gabriella Eckardt and 6 great-grandchildren: Alexander Pinter, Lydia Super, Anika Super, Christopher Eckardt, Grayson Eckardt, and Laura Eckardt. Ethan Dennis Eckman, infant son of Eric and Kelly Eckman of Janet Ave, Strasburg, passed away on December 19th, 2018, his birthday.
“He was our miracle baby and is now our perfect angel.” Samuel F. Rhoades, Jr., age 82 of Quarryville, PA, passed away at Harrison Senior Living of Christiana on Saturday, December 29, 2018. He was the husband of C. Joanne Shivery Rhoades with whom he celebrated 62 years of marriage on December 29th, the day he passed away. He was born in Quarryville, son of the late Samuel F. Sr. & Mabel Wells Rhoades. He was a member of Encounter Church of Quarryville. He retired from the Pillsbury Company in 1994. Sam enjoyed woodworking, hunting, camping, farming, roller skating and most of all he loved spending time with his family. Surviving besides his wife are 4 daughters: Linda Rhoades of New Providence, Patricia Summers of Quarryville, Barbara wife of Curt Sweger of Strasburg, Teresa wife of Daniel Jennings of Quarryville, 14 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. |
