As they have in recent years, proceeds from the 2019 Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church's annual yard sale will help fund the congregation's ongoing mission to a Peruvian community.
Middle Octorara has been working with a church in the Peruvian village of Tamshiyacu since 2008. That's when the congregation agreed to fund a new church in the village, using a $45,000 bequest left to the local church.
Members Dan and Boni Henry will be working in the Tamshiyacu community in July.
"We will be trying to get into the community more," Dan Henry said. "We will be teaching Bible school, doing some maintenance at the church and the school, and working on the pastor's mother's house."
Yard sale contributions began arriving on April 14.
"We will have some home-made outdoor items, including bird houses. There will be tools and other things. It will be a typical yard sale," Henry said.
The mission team would like to net $2,000 from this year's sale.
"It is our biggest fundraiser for the mission," Henry said. "We did well with the nuts and bolts sale, but this always brings in more."
Donations from congregation members and the community will be displayed on tables in the church's social hall.
"For years, we brought the items to the social hall and then took them outside early Saturday morning. Then, one year, it rained and we held the sale indoors. That's when a light bulb went off and we realized we could deal with the items just once by holding the sale indoors," Henry said.
When the congregation's sale moved indoors, church members realized they could offer space outside to the community.
"They can rent spaces outside at $10 each. They have to supply their own tables," Henry said.
To rent a space, call the church office at 717-786-3402 or Henry at 717-381-9947.
Food, including hot dogs, barbecue, coffee and donuts, and some breakfast items, will be available for purchase.
This year's sale will be held at the church, 1199 Valley Rd. (Rt. 372), from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 20. The sale will be held rain or shine.
