"I didn't want to go through my senior year and realize I missed an opportunity."
That's why Marissa Witmer decided to compete in the Miss Solanco Scholarship Pageant in November, 2016.
Earlier this year, she earned another title - Miss Lancaster County. In June, she will be one of several Solanco residents to compete in the Miss Pennsylvania pageant.
Nine girls will vie for the title of Miss Solanco in the annual Miss Solanco Scholarship Pageant this weekend.
The 61st annual pageant will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 28, at Solanco High School, 585 Solanco Rd.
Competing in this year's pageant are:
Emily Zook, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Doug Zook of Kirkwood. Miss Zook will be accompanied by Jona Linnenbaugh. She will play the cello in the talent portion of the contest. Her platform is the importance of music therapy. She is sponsored by the Lancaster County Sportsman Association.
Marla Peiffer continues to win pageant titles.
Since becoming Miss Solanco 2011, she has won two regional titles and, this year, became third runner-up in the Miss Pennsylvania competition.
Now she's using the experience to help run the annual pageant she won four years ago.
"I'm taking what I've learned and passing it down to the contestants," she said.
Girls who are competing for the title of Miss Solanco 2015 gathered in Quarryville on Saturday, June 7, to pose for photographs for the pageant's program.
The contestants used an historic home and one of the community's banks for their photo shoots.
There are 17 girls competing for the title.
In the front row, left to right, are Cassie Twyman, Bree Miller, Victoria Modderman, Caitlynn Cozzone, and Jess Lapp.
In the second row are Alyse Crandall, Donna Montgomery, Kaitlyn Ashley, and Brianna Dickel. In the third row are Harley Haga and Marisa Flaud. In the fourth row are Abby Yoder, Maddie Lasko, Amanda Bauer, Erica Jackson, Lindsay Bechtold, and Autumn Keller.
Standing behind the contestants is Miss Solanco 2014, Alli McClune.
The pageant will be held at Solanco High School in November.
The 60th Annual Miss Solanco Pageant will be held in the Solanco High School Auditorium on Saturday, November 29, 2014, at 7:30 p.m.
Alli McClune was named Miss Solanco 2014 at the 59th annual Miss Solanco Scholarship Pageant Saturday night, November 30.
McClune performed a pointe dance to the tune Up Is Down during the talent portion of the contest.
Her platform for the pageant was helping bring dance to the disadvantaged.
She is the daughter of Jen Deibler and Jason McClune.
Her mother was Miss Solanco in 1991 and has helped coordinate recent pageants. Deibler and her husband did not work on this year’s pageant because McClune was competing.
McClune was sponsored by the Solanco Fair Association. She was accompanied in the pageant by Payton Garver, one of the junior princesses who participated in this year’s pageant.
Nine Solanco area girls will compete for the title of Miss Solanco 2014 in the scholarship pageant to be held next month.
The pageant, to be held in the Solanco High School auditorium on Saturday night, November 30, is sponsored by the Quarryville Teenage Club.
For the first time this year, each contestant will be accompanied by a young princess.
The organizers chose to have the young princesses participate because the next pageant level includes young girls.
