Although they have similar duties, all is not equal with the members of Rising Sun's town board.
Mayor Travis Marion, and Commissioners Allen Authenreath and Dave Warnick are paid a stipend of $20 per meeting.
Commissioners Joe Shephard and Brian Leishear, who took office in November 2015, earn $275 per quarter. Because they took office after the pay hike was approved October 27, 2015. That hike also raised the mayor's salary to $325 per quarter.
Those earning a stipend are at an advantage this year.
Of the first eight scheduled regular town meetings in 2016, five were cancelled or rescheduled to another date.
The, first meeting of the new year was held on January 12. That meeting was attended by the board. Mayor Travis Marion opted to attend a presentation at Rising Sun High School that night for the state champion volleyball team.
The January 26 meeting was cancelled due to snow.
The February 9 meeting was also cancelled. The February 23 meeting was held as scheduled.
The March 8 meeting was cancelled due to ongoing renovations at the town hall. The March 22 meeting was canceled. That meeting was then held on Thursday, March 31.
On April 12, a meeting was held.
On April 26, that meeting was canceled due to "county elections, no action items, and scheduling conflicts."
An April 20 budget meeting was also cancelled.
This has been a transitional time for the town. During the month of March, the town lost two staffers. Both Clerk Marsha Spencer and staffer Pam Haines resigned their positions. The town has hired temporary staffers to fill in gaps. The town hall is also now closed every day for an hour for lunch.
