This weekend marks the 25th year of kids in Rising Sun getting hooked.
The annual Youth Fishing Derby is set for Saturday, May 7 at the pond on West Main Street from 8-11 a.m.
Registration for those ages 12 and under begins at 7:30 a.m. Fishing runs from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. Those who want to have all paperwork in order prior to the event, may obtain the permission forms from the Greater Rising Sun Chamber website. New this year, is a facebook page where people can ask questions, get information about the event, and get their paperwork in order prior to the day.
Mark Hyman has organized the event on behalf of the Rising Sun Chamber of Commerce for many years. Hyman said social media has given people more advance notice of the event and helped to build excitement. "It's much easier for people to get sign up sheets and register now," said Hyman.
Prizes will be awarded in a number of categories such as smallest fish caught and most fish caught. Every participant receives a prize. Admission is free and the derby is held rain or shine. Participants must supply their own bait and tackle.
"We're just excited about this. We always have a great turnout and it's an exciting morning. The kids are excited and everybody leaves with something," said Hyman.
