Rain has poured on downtown Elkton's summer of fun. "It's been awful. We had to cancel so many things," said Jessica Price, administrative assistant at Elkton's Chamber/Alliance.
Every month, from April through October, the chamber/alliance hosts a downtown car show. They also host Music on Main on Thursday nights.
The May car show was rained out. In June, it rained during the car show. The typical in excess of 100 cars, was reduced to 15.
Those who own those classic and costly cars are reluctant to take them out in imperfect weather.
Things improved in July. Organizers expected a poor turnout due to the show running during the Cecil County Fair. More than 100 drivers registered their cars at the car show. Another 40 or so, parked along North and Main streets without signing up.
Cancelling an event scheduled months in advance can be a challenge. On car show days, the phones at the chamber/alliance office ring constantly. Now, by 1 p.m. on car show days, an email goes out to about 300 people letting them know whether the show is on or off. A sign is also posted on the corner of North and Main streets. "On a weird weather day, we may get 20-30 calls just about the car show," said Price.
When it comes to the Music on Main concert series, the July 18 show featuring Swing City was cancelled after the Cecil County Health Department issued a heat advisory. Swing City will now return on October 4. Weather also cancelled the August 1 concert featuring Kona Shame. There are no dates to reschedule but a member of Kona Shame will perform with Gang of Two on August 22.
Those at the chamber/alliance said this year has been a wacky one, weather wise.
"I remember one year, we cancelled Music on Main once. I guess it caught up with us this year," added Price.
