A Community Fire Company of Perryville fire police officer remained in Christiana Hospital Friday night, October 25, in critical condition after he was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic earlier in the day.
According to Brad McGuirk, an assistant chief with the fire company, David R. Barr, 65, of Port Deposit, who has been a fire police officer with the company for 13 years, was struck shortly before 4 p.m. on westbound Route 40. The fire company was called about 3:20 p.m. for a motor vehicle accident on westbound Route 40 in the area of the Relax Inn. The fire company cleared the scene but fire police remained on scene to assist Perryville Police with traffic control.
Barr was wearing a reflective vest and was surrounded by flares used in traffic direction when he was struck by a 2009 Hyundai. The identity of the driver was not known by fire company officials.
Barr was taken by ground to Christiana Care Center. He was slated to be flown by Delaware State Police helicopter but medical personnel determined that due to the nature of his injuries, he would be transported by ground.
Barr is also a member of Water Witch Fire Company.
