Pastoring is in Jamie Fetter's blood.
Fetter, 26, is the lead pastor at Bay Church of North East.
"I've been preaching since I was 14 years old," said Fetter.
His great grandfather was a Pentecostal minister. His grandmother, at age 83, is a retired minister from Newville, Pennsylvania. She continues to serve the church.
Pastor Fetter was working as the assistant pastor at Destiny Church in Chambersburg, Pa. when he got a phone call that changed his life and his state of residence. In January, he got a phone call asking him to serve at Bay Church.
"We prayed about it," he said.
In early March he began working here. "We saw the need. The people here are hurting and bound by addiction. We heeded the call of God," he said.
Since he's been leading the church, attendance has grown.
He said 25 people were attending when he began at Bay Church. Now, attendance has grown to 80 people. "Drugs and homelessness are the biggest issues I have seen here," he said. He also said that those struggling with addiction have joined the congregation.
Community outreach is a big part of his mission.
Vacation Bible School was held last week. On Tuesdays, church members head out into the community and feed the homeless. In the fall there are plans to host an evangelist and family fun day.
"We love the area. We love the people of the area. We feel God called us here. We feel the people are hurting. There is hope in this community. We here at Bay Church love them and Jesus loves them," Pastor Fetter said.
Pastor Fetter brings knowledge of the world to the area. He worked as a worldwide evangelist serving in South Africa, Liberia, and Uganda. He also earned a master's degree. He and his wife have two children and live in North East.
Services at Bay Church are held on Sundays. Sunday school begins at 10 a.m. and services begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday nights, Bible study is held at 7 p.m.
The last Sunday of each month evening services are held. The first Sunday of each month, a fellowship meal is held.
"We reach them with food and try to keep them coming back," he said.
The church is adjacent to the Chef's Kitchen, Route 40, North East. Pastor Fetter can be reached at 410-287-7000.
