Amanda Hickman has big plans for Perryville.
Hickman, the town's former code enforcement officer, has now taken the job as Perryville's economic development coordinator. She has worked for the town for four and one-half years. As code enforcement officer, she was charged with the task of overseeing all town codes and ordinances - from high grass to zoning regulations.
She is excited about the new post and isn't a novice.
She worked closely with the former economic development coordinator and already "had her foot in the door" managing the Town of Perryville Farmers' Market.
Her immediate goals will include continuing to oversee the market which runs until October. She is also focused on planning town events and attracting new businesses to town.
"We need to market ourselves and show it's worth being here," said Hickman. She explained that the Perryville Sports Bar recently opened in town on Broad Street. She wasn't part of that process. "I'm glad they're here. I want to do a formal opening with them," she said.
She is also coming up with ways to get people into town. "I would like to see a downtown. We need a business population and community activities. There are a lot of aspects to this job," she said. "We need the community to be involved."
She said code enforcement helped her get to know the people of Perryville.
"As code enforcement, I have heard complaints. I know what people want and need. That will help me," she said.
Another item on Hickman's agenda is to evaluate and update the town's website. She wants to include expanded information on there. She said she welcomes input from residents. They may email her at email@example.com, stop by or call town hall.
Until the code enforcement position is filled, Hickman is doing double duty.
