You can get a healthy start to Fall Fest 2014.
After a four-year absence, the Fall Fest 5K Run/Walk has returned. That event will be held on Saturday, September 20 at 8 a.m. in downtown Elkton. "We want to start the day with a healthy focus," said Jessica Price, administrative assistant for the Elkton Chamber/Alliance.
Saturday will be jam-packed with events from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Following the run, at about 8:30 a.m., the Cub Scouts will host the annual Cecil 500 Push Cart Derby registration. Racing begins at 9:30. During this event, handmade cars are raced along North Street. Participation in this event grows each year.
Vendors and crafters along Main Street will also open for business beginning at 8:30 a.m.
At 10 a.m. the Pretty Baby contest begins. Registration for children starts at 8 a.m. This contest is held at the North Street stage. There are various age categories and prizes - there are categories for 0-6 months, 7-12 months, 1-2 years, and 2-3 years.
At 11 a.m., the Miss Fall Fest contest kicks off. This is for teens. Registration
begins at 10 a.m. Miss Fall Fest contestants must be ages 15-17. Junior Miss
contestants are 12-14. Winners receive a crown, sash, and prizes.
Performers from Bobbie Anne's Dance perform from 12:30-2:30 p.m.
Adam and Blake are not expected to attend but, The Voice of Elkton singing contest will be held from 2:30-4:30 p.m. This singing competition has replaced the former Elkton Idol event. The first 15 applicants will be accepted. The entry fee is $15 per person. The winner will take home a grand prize.
The highlight of the day will come at 6 p.m. Beatlemania Now will perform at the North Street Stage. They are new to Fall Fest this year and travel throughout the country paying tribute to the Fab Four and the 50th anniversary of the group's coming to America. "I've heard a lot of excitement about this from a lot of Beatle fans," said Elkton Main Street Manager Mary Jo Jablonski.
All throughout the day on Saturday and also on Friday night, there will be a children's carnival on Howard Street. This is a pay per ride activity.
On Friday night, September 19 the Fall Fest preview will be held. At 5 p.m. a downtown car show will be held on Main Street and surrounding parking lots.
It is free to participate in or visit the car show. There will be a donation jar to help offset costs. Vendors will also be selling a variety of food. At 6 p.m., live music by The Cruisers begins. This features tribute artists for Big Bopper, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, and Teen Angel.
Jablonski said that more and more people turn out for Fall Fest each year. She said that social media has helped to bring in more people.
