After working at area restaurants, at a Delaware jail, and for county government, Renee Capano has landed her dream job.
Capano, a wife and mother, and member of the Charlestown town board, is now also "The Book Lady".
On school days, Capano loads up a van and heads out to schools in Baltimore, Harford, and Cecil counties. Once at the schools, she sets up a display of books and materials. What she shows off are books for teachers and other school staff. She turns out at 14-16 schools per day and fills orders for books and educational games.
"The most rewarding thing is giving books to schools. For every 10 items that are sold, the schools receive a free item to be used in the school library or classrooms. Books are Fun is partnered with Reading is Fundamental to help promote literacy and provide books to children that need them," said Capano.
She got involved with the company while working as a helper to the former Books are Fun representative. That representative suffered health issues, and Capano took over.
"I can make my own hours. If something comes up, I can change my schedule," she said.
She enjoys working in the Cecil schools the most. She said that she is welcomed and teachers enjoying buying affordable books and classroom incentives.
"It's great to be your own boss. I'm actually happy. I've been a stay at home mom for six or seven years and it's nice to get out," she said. "This lets me still be mom, wife, and commissioner."
Books are Fun is a national company which places books and other items at schools and corporations.
