Solanco's softball team entered the week with an opportunity to capture another section title. The Mules (12-4 overall, 10-3 league) were tied with Elizabethtown for first place. Elizabethtown will host the Mules Wednesday afternoon when the section crown could be decided. Last Thursday, Solanco routed Lebanon 18-0 in three innings.
The Mules scored nine runs in both the second and third innings. Liz Mowrer was 2 for 3, including a triple, and knocked in three. Bekah Borcky was 1 for 2 with a home run and four RBIs. Brianna Firlein was 2 for 2 with three RBIs. Cait Armstrong had a hit and drove in two. Randi Rambo recorded a triple and an RBI. Winning pitcher Hanna Phillips did not allow a baserunner and recorded two strikeouts. "We got the result we were looking for," Solanco coach Brett Miller said. "It was a game where you have to take care of business and the girls performed." On Monday, May 2, Solanco topped Conestoga Valley 8-2. The Mules went ahead 1-0 in the second when Mowrer led off with a double and scored on a Sydney Sturgill single. "That run felt good because we kind of thought CV would struggle to score a run or two against us," said Miller. "Then we kept tacking runs on." In the third, Abby Heidelbaugh singled with one out. Armstrong doubled and both runners scored on a Mowrer double. Solanco added two more runs in the fifth. Armstrong doubled to get things started and scored on Rambo's single. Rambo advanced to second on a sac bunt by Kalyn Burger and Firlein delivered an RBI single. In the sixth, Kate Sheaffer had a leadoff single and Borcky reached on an error. Heidelbaugh tripled in both baserunners and scored on Mowrer's sac fly. Phillips notched eight strikeouts and yielded three hits and three walks. Mowrer and Armstrong combined for four hits on the day. "When your three and four hitters have a big game you expect to score some runs," Miller said. Mowrer, who was a Section Four All-Star last year at Columbia before transferring to Solanco, has given the Mules a big boost. "Liz has made the transition really well," said Miller. "It's challenging at times but she has a mental toughness you like. Being on a team like this has helped her transition." Comments are closed.
