"The girls were motivated to play even without Coach Miller there," said McClune. "They wanted to win for him."
Mules pitcher Kalyn Burger allowed five hits and two walks and did not notch a strikeout. Solanco's season is not over. The Mules are scheduled to face Pequea Valley on Wednesday. Solanco has secured a berth in the district tournament which begins Tuesday, May 19. Last Thursday, the Mules downed Wilson 8-2. "It was a needed and important team win for us to position ourselves for the district playoffs," Miller said. "We showed a much better team intensity compared to [the May 4 loss] to Garden Spot." The visitors scored a run in the top of the first and Solanco responded with four in the home half. Abby Heidelbaugh singled and went to second on a Madi Sheaffer bunt. Maribeth Ault singled and Bekah Borcky drew a walk. Burger delivered a two-run single and Sydney Sturgill slugged a two-run triple. The Mules scored four in the fourth as Borcky belted a grand slam. "Bekah has been swinging the bat well and she seems to be getting those clutch hits over the past several games," said Miller. Burger gave up five hits and fanned three. She received support from her defense which was led by senior shortstop Maribeth Ault. "With more dirt on her uniform than the field at the end of the game, Maribeth Ault led the way as she elevated her defensive intensity with several veteran plays and effort," said Miller.
