Both the Solanco girls and boys track and field teams topped visiting Lebanon Monday, April 13. "Our goal was to come away with a win for each team," coach Ivan Haines said. "Both teams practiced hard for the meet. Both teams came ready to compete." The girls prevailed 111-37. "The girls’ team did an excellent job last night earning firsts in all but three events," said Haines. "What was really nice to see was that the firsts were earned equally by both underclassmen and seniors." Solanco scored every point possible in the distance races. Morgan Perry prevailed in the 1600 and Cortney Johnson took the 3200. Jen Eberly swept the hurdles events. Other Solanco winners: Natalie Crum (400), Carly Allport (800), Abby Yoder (200), Ashley Mundorff (shot put), Cameron Trimble (discus), Emily Conklin (javelin), Jen Eberly (long jump), Jacqueline Groff (triple jump), and Brooke McCardell (high jump).
Alexis Davis, Cassie Twyman, Dorothy McCullough, and Allyson Osborne teamed to take the 400 meter relay. Allport, Crum, Yoder, and Eberly combined to capture the 1600 meter relay. "The girls team is coming together very nicely," said Haines. "These girls are working hard and will prove to be a team that may surprise others." The Solanco boys improved to 4-0 on the season with an 84-66 triumph. "We matched up with Lebanon pretty well in all events," Haines said. "In order to win we had to earn as many seconds and thirds as possible." Solanco's sprint boys dominated the meet, picking up 32 out 36 points. "The sprinters were able to pick up some much unexpected points," said Haines. This was an area where we thought we would have trouble earning points." Junior Billy Cooney earned a first in the high hurdles, intermediate hurdles, and 200 meter dash and was part of the winning 4 x 100 meter relay team. Liam Hodgson won the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. He also helped the 4 x 800 meter relay earn a first. Troy Miller earned a first in the high jump (season best 6-5) and in the long jump. The other big first came from Gary Doubt in the shot put, throwing his best of the year of 43-3. Prosper Eguzouwa won the 200. "This team continues to work hard and improve," Haines said. "I feel that the boys team has the talent to develop into a successful team, but we must continue to work and perform a lot harder if we are to reach our goal. The coaching staff is very proud of how the team performed." The Mules competed in the Hempfield Invitational Saturday, April 11. Cooney captured the high hurdles and was second in the intermediate hurdles. Miller was first in the high jump and second in the long jump. Comments are closed.
