The Solanco wrestling team is looking to extend an impressive streak while Thomas Haines is trying to make history. While the Mules are vying for a fifth straight Section One title, Haines will be attempting to capture a fourth state title. Last year, Haines (career record of 132-5) became the 40th Pennsylvania wrestler to win three state titles. Only 10 have claimed four with Haines and Kennard-Dale's Chance Marsteller having the chance to join that exclusive club this season. After wrestling in the 220-pound weight class his first three years, Haines is moving to heavyweight.
The Mules lost six starters to graduation including Ronnie Perry, who placed seventh at the state tournament last year. "We lost a great senior group and it will be tough to fill those weights," coach John Little said. "Just like any season, attitude and injuries are the big concerns. If we can keep great attitudes and stay injury-free I think this could be a successful season." In addition to Haines, Solanco returns two other wrestlers who have had success in Hershey. Connor Sheehan was a state runnerup at 106 pounds last winter. Bo Spiller (220) came within one victory of placing at the PIAA tournament as a heavyweight last season. Andrew Morrison (projected weight of 106), Taylor Morrison (120), Alec Proffitt (126), Wyatt Jennings (132), Kody Hart (145), Dalton Groff (145), Zeke Cook (182), and Shane Devoe (195) are returning wrestlers with experience. Newcomers Owen Stull, Joey Davis, Hunter Smith, and Brandon Wiggins could contribute. Solanco has won three of the last four Lancaster-Lebanon League titles, narrowly missing out last year. The Mules were fifth in the team standings at the PIAA tournament, the second best showing in school history. Solanco was fourth in 2011 when Haines and Dan Neff both won a state title.
