The Solanco boys track and field team opened its defense of the Section Two title with a lopsided victory over Garden Spot Tuesday, March 29. The Mules won 14 of the 18 events and triumphed 104.5-41.5. Senior Billy Cooney recorded four wins, dominating the hurdles and helping the 4x100 and 4x400 relays to a win. His time of 14.5 in the 110 hurdles qualified him for districts.
Senior Troy Miller earned wins in the high jump (6-0) and the long jump (21-3,5). The Mules prevailed in all three relay events. Alec Munro, Charlie Canby, Liam Hodgson, and Nick Boulé teamed to take the 3200 meter relay. Hodgson also claimed the 3200 meter run. Cooner, Prosper Equzouwa, Miller, and Eric Hopkins won the 400 meter relay. Cooney, Boulé, Brit Yoder, and Dennis Mitchem triumphed in the 1600 meter relay. Solanco's throwers eanred 24 of a possible 27 points. "The improvement and the hard work this winter by the throwers have helped," coach Ivan Haines said. "Most of the throwers are starting out with better throws than where they ended last year. Seniors Noah McCardell, Gary Doubts, and Kyle Williams each had great throws in their respected events, earning wins." McCardell notched a personal best of 168-3 while prevailing in the javelin. Williams won the discus with a throw of 110-2. Doubts (42-8.5) triumphed in the shot put. "This group of throwers can add greatly to the success of the team this year," said Haines. Jared McCluskey won the pole vault. Two newcomers contributed wins – Mitchem in the 400 meters and Robbie McHugh in the triple jump. In the girls team competition, Garden Spot defeated Solanco 87-57. "The girls had a tough night," Haines said. "They were unable to pick up many points on the track. We are still looking for sprinters. Distance also had problems gaining points. The bright spot was the performance of the girl throwers. They only gave up five points." Freshman Troyana Miller did an outstanding job in the shot put, earning a first with a distance of 31-8. Cameron Trimble (96-0) triumphed in the discus and Cayla Robinson (110-0) won the javelin. Jen Eberly (15-4) claimed the long jump. The Mules won two of the three relay races. Cortney Johnson, Aubree Roop, Reece Curry-Saner, and Morgan Perry combined to win the 3200 meter relay. Eberly, Abby Stull, Jaqueline Groff, and Christen Esposito teamed to take the 1600 meter relay. "Both teams still have a lot of work to do and need to continue to make improvements," Haines said. "In some of the areas we need to find athletes to fill in behind our top athletes. I believe that both teams will surprise our opponents this year." Comments are closed.
